SENIOR WEEK 2K17

Senior Class advisor Ms Rivero, and officers want to thank every senior who came out and made senior week a fantastic turn out!

Though seniors are at the top of the food chain here at Miami High, there’s not much to look forward to in 12th grade except graduating. And of course, Senior Week!
Class of 2017’s Senior Week has come and gone, and as the last class born in the 90’s, all seniors can vouch that it was one of the best. Senior Week kicked off on Tuesday, January 24th, with a fancy breakfast for seniors at 94th Aero Squadron, followed by Senior Movie Night in the Miami High theatre where 130 seniors watched Don’t Breathe (2016).
Giovanni Clement—whom many seniors may know as the life of the party at the breakfast dancing the morning away with Shavano Forbes, Wildny Present, Jonathan Davila, and Ronald Christalin— said, “I really enjoyed the breakfast. The vibe was great and it was a lot of fun.”
“The breakfast was delicious and the restaurant was nice,” said Ronald Christalin. “My favorite part was the announcing of the superlatives, seeing seniors get what they deserved. It was also funny when some people got something that didn’t go with them.”
On Wednesday, January 25th, due to the Junior Ring Ceremony, there was no outside event planned for seniors, but they were encouraged to come to school representing their favorite or future college/university.

Senior Nataly Fernandez and Diana Aguilar at Picnic

The Senior Picnic took place on Thursday, January 26th, at Tropical Park with 180 in attendance. Later that night, about 40 contestants competed in the Senior Lip-Sync Battle in the theatre.
Many seniors thought the picnic was a success. Anislevys Gil said the best part was the rock climbing and the bouncing houses, while Wildny Present said, “I had a lot of fun in the water balloon activity.”
Madeline Reyes also said the picnic was a ton of fun. “Not only did thepicnic land on the day of my 18th birthday, but the senior class really did their thing with this event,” she said.
That doesn’t mean things couldn’t have gone even better. Anislevys said the DJ could have played better music. Wildny said, “If the water balloon activity would’ve had teams divided by water balloon colors, that would’ve been awesome.”

Senior class treasurer Karina Garcia, Secretary Jean Manco, Historian Jasmin Ortega, Ms. Rivero, Vice President Kelvin Cash, and President Headly Cash at Senior Glow Fest.

Senior Glow Fest was held on February 3rd after Senior Week, due to the Miami High vs. Coral Gables Basketball game on the 27th of January. The Glow fest was a total success thanks to the activities office, the Senior Board who helped with decorations, and color guard advisor Ms. Armas who lent the senior class black lights. Mohammad Hamad said he thought it was going to be like a regular dance where they only sell cookies and sodas, but, “Senior class gave out free nachos that were delicious.”
Jennifer Tejada said, “The DJ killed it the whole night and the decorations were so vibrant I actually felt like I was in a club.”

Compared to class of 2016’s Senior Week activities, attendance went up slightly. For example, 164 students attended last year’s breakfast while this year 170 attended. Also, about 170 seniors went on the field trip last year whereas this year 180 students attended the picnic.
Most noticeable, while 40 students attended movie night last year, this year 130 seniors showed up, and 200 students attended Glow Fest 2017 while 130 attended Glow Fest 2016.
The senior class officers promoted all events as much as they possibly could to encourage attendance,
which included having all officers post on their social media pages and the senior class secretary post on the class of 2017 page on Instagram, @mhsclassof2017.

The Senior Class sold senior activity packages which included the senior breakfast, picnic, prom and Grad Bash for $220, $10-dollar higher than last year. Individually, prices differed. Senior class treasurer Karina Garcia said, “The breakfast individually was $30, the picnic was $15, prom was $75, and Grad Bash was $140.”
