Legendary Senior Pranks and Those to Come

By Wendy Arrillaga, Staff Writer

Every year, seniors try to come up with a prank that will go down in the school’s history. Senior Stephanie Aguilar said, “Every graduating class wants to be remembered by those who come up the ranks behind them. A senior prank is one way you can leave a mark behind that will be talked about for years, plus it’s fun!”

In the past, there have been some infamous pranks throughout Miami Senior high. According to Ms. Puentes, a Miami High alumna who graduated with the class of 1993, one of the most memorable pranks was when some seniors from her class went to grad night with liquor and were completely under the influence.

“No one was aware they were up to no good and back then we trusted the students of Miami Senior High, so we didn’t bag check them. Of course, these students got into trouble and had to repeat the entire year, “she said.

Stephanie Aguilar is a senior at Miami High who might be planning a senior prank this year.

Ms. Puentes also recalls being part of a senior prank herself when she was a teacher. “They stole My Johnny Depp cut out and were sending me ransom letters and poems. They even took the cutout and put it on the roof. I found it very funny. At the Senior Academy Awards that year the opening of the show was a video of the seniors stealing the cut out and everyone laughed,” she said.

The worst prank Puentes recalls is when a group of seniors entered the theatre and spray painted the curtains. “At that point you must have the common sense to know you will get into trouble, which they did, “she said.

One of the most recent senior pranks involved seniors inflating a mini pool in the East Patio and having a beach day. Estrella Quiroz, an alumna from class of 2014 who participated in the event, said, “I loved our senior prank, because it was very simple but memorable. We talked to an administrator who helped us coordinate the small event and I spoke to my club advisor to make sure we weren’t over doing it.  “

Unfortunately for Ms. Rodgers, an alumna who graduated in 2012, her class’s senior prank was never executed because Miami High was under construction and her class didn’t have any senior activities so they were all depressed about their circumstances. “One of the main ideas was to have the gym filled with cups of water, but it was mainly a rumor and no one ever carried it out, “she said.

Some ideas that have been circulating amongst seniors this year, per seniors who wished to remain anonymous, include using animals, cups of water and other various objects to annoy the underclassmen and administration.

However, some seniors weren’t even aware of this year’s senior prank. “I thought the senior prank was a myth or something you only see in a teenage movie,” said Felipe Martinez.

Because many students only converse of the so called senior prank, no one knows where or when it will be carried out.

Others decide to opt out of the senior prank completely because they’re afraid to get in trouble. Guillermo LaRosa said, “I’m a little iffy about trying to do a senior prank because I want to graduate, but I think there are ways to keep the prank clean simple and fun.”

Perhaps the final word comes from Principle Valdez, who said, “Make sure you use common sense and just to be sure ask an administrator whom you’re comfortable with to make sure you’re not passing the limit.”
