She is seen all around school always helping with school activities. She is the Class of 2019 vice president and a BETA member. Sophomore Ismara Corea is a scholar and an overachiever, having a 3.5 unweighted and 4.1 weighted GPA. Ismara is funny, creative, and industrious, which makes her one of a kind.

Life at Miami High

She originally wanted to attend Coral Gables High. She said, “I actually wanted to be a Cavalier all of 8th grade, but once I stepped foot in Miami High during a summer orientation, it just felt like home.”

She was mesmerized.  “Once I saw the theater and the ‘penthouse’ known as Mr.  Asper’s room, I knew exactly where I belonged,” she said. “The school looked like a big castle, and I loved every bit of it. I also noticed the club banners, and BETA automatically caught my attention. The school was rich in spirit with tons of classes to pick from.”

Currently Ismara is taking AP Capstone Seminar, P.E., Honors Physics, Pre-Calculus honors, English II honors, Journalism 3 yearbook, AP Spanish Language, and Ethics/Psychology.

Her favorite class is AP Capstone Seminar. “Even though it is a challenging class, I’ve learned a lot when it comes to writing skills, and Dr. DeNight makes the class very active,” she said. “Also since the class is mainly reading and writing, I love it because those are some of my strengths.”

Her hardest class is Pre-Calculus. “Only because I’m not great in math and it’s one of my biggest weaknesses,” she said.

She said her favorite thing about the school is how there is always something to do whether it is with your club or SGA. “I love being preoccupied and helping out with school events.”

Class Officer

Ismara Corea is Class of 2019 vice president, and she has been reelected to continue her job for the upcoming year. “As a class officer,” she said, “I help put together events like pep rallies and dances. Those balloons don’t inflate themselves and the decorations certainly don’t appear out of nowhere. We design banners and make sales to benefit the class.”

She wanted to become a class officer because she has always wanted to be involved with the school and to work “behind the scenes.” Her hands are always full, whether it’s with class activities or assignments.

As an officer, it is not easy to juggle class activities and schoolwork. “The hardest part for me has to be when there are big events like the Valentine’s Day dance,” she said. “It was stressful to organize all the decorations, food, and profits, but in the end it was a success.”

One of the best parts, she said is the friendships she forms with her fellow officers and how they all share ambition to work.   She believes life is boring if you are not preoccupied and awaiting for new things to work with.

Personal Life

Ismara was born on December 14, 2000, in Miami. Her mom is from La Ceiba, Honduras, and her dad is from Leon, Nicaragua. She attended elementary school at Southside and middle school at Shenandoah Middle.

Although she is an only child, she had a very interesting childhood that included many activities such as dancing in ballet, cooking with her mom, learning photography from her dad, and developing a sense of fashion from her grandma.

“I love taking pictures of places I enjoy and developing them months later,” she said. Ismara wants to attend Columbia University  in New York and become a journalist that covers political and community issues. She also loves to see art in Wynwood because there is always something new to look at.
