Jessica’s favorite memories from HOSA was meeting plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Salzhauer a.k.a. Dr. Miami

Anyone who knows senior Jessica Garcia knows that she likes to have fun and joke around. However, Jessica is also a very involved student serving as SGA corresponding secretary and an active member of HOSA. She is a funny, determined, and a proud Miami High student.

 School Life

Jessica, who attended Citrus Elementary and Citrus Middle school, came to Miami High because her dad and sister are alumni and always told her how great the school was.

In her four years of high school, her favorite class has always been health science. She said, “It’s the only class I have taken in high school where I do what I really want to do in the future.” Her least favorite class is math because, “I always get answers wrong and end up giving up.”

Her favorite high school event was 2016’s homecoming week because there was always something to do from decorating floats and banners, to going to football games to support her friends.

SGA

Jessica is the 2016-2017 SGA corresponding secretary. She decided to run her junior year because she loves Miami High and figured this was a good way to become involved in school. She recounted her reaction when she won: “I was so happy and had a sense of relief that all my campaign work didn’t go to waste.”

As corresponding secretary, she spreads the word about SGA events through social media, makes banners, and helps 2nd VP Genesy Leiva in IOC meetings.

The best part of being in SGA is: “It feels like a family. All year long it’s been a team effort, and that’s what’s helped us be so successful this year,” she said.

The most frustrating part of Jessica’s job is that students don’t understand how much work SGA does behind the scenes. “We are always doing sales, collecting money, and getting permission from administration. I don’t think students understand how many hours we stay after school, or how early we have to get to school for certain events, which is why I get frustrated when we get confused with Class of 2017,” she said.

HOSA

Jessica joined HOSA because she’s in the Allied Health Science Program. “I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field, so when I saw Miami High had Health Science as an elective, it was my first choice,” she said.

Part of being in HOSA means competing, and Jessica decided to compete her junior year in medical terminology. However, she did not win because she spent most of her time studying for her EKG test. “I wasn’t bothered about it because I knew I didn’t try my all, but I was still content because I learned a lot in that competition,” she said.

Besides competing, Jessica also likes participating in HOSA’s medical-related events such as blood drives. However, her favorite event was meeting plastic surgeon Dr. Micahel Salzhauer a.k.a. Dr. Miami, who is famous for his Snapchat, earlier this year in the MHS auditorium. She loved this event because it showed her that at the end of the day, all the hard work needed to be part of the medical field pays off.

Personal Life

Jessica was born in Miami on August 8, 1999. Her mom is from Guatemala, and her dad is from Cuba. She has two siblings: an older sister with kids of her own and a younger brother who will be a Baby Sting next year.

Outside of school she likes to hang out with her friends or binge watch shows on Netflix. Her favorite TV show at the moment is “A Different World.”

Jessica knows that in the future she wants to work in the medical field. After graduating MHS, she will attend Miami Dade for two years to raise her GPA and then transfer to FIU where she hopes to study to become an OB/GYN nurse.
