Girls Volleyball Team

The game is tied, and you need a point to win. Your team’s setter hits the ball over the net, and the opposing side hits it back. You jump sky high, spike it down, and win the game for your team!

The girls’ volleyball team had many wins this season, finishing their season in mid-October with a 16-4 record. The season started on the first week of school and it ended.

According to their coach Ms. Vela, “The 2nd game against Miami Beach was their best game of the season because they played to their full potential. Their district playoff loss was their toughest lost because it brought the season to an end and the girls could’ve gone further.”

She believes next year’s team has to start from scratch because 8 of the 12 members on the varsity team were seniors. “There were a couple of girls on this team with great qualities, so it’s hard to pick just one who was the best,” said Ms. Vela.

Players join the team for many different reasons. Senior Alicia Espinoza said, “I played in the eighth grade, and I really enjoyed it. My coach told my brother, and he convinced me that I should join.”

Sophomore Karla Pena said, “I’ve always liked the sport, and I wasn’t here last summer so I couldn’t join as a freshman. I’m glad that I finally got the chance to join this year.”

“It was just something I tried and ended up really liking,” expressed junior Bianca Torres. “I loved playing volleyball so I knew it would be fun if I joined.”

Many players like being on a team. This is probably why some of the girls on the team have been on the team for so long. Senior Jessie Simmons said, “I’ve been on the team since freshman year, and it’s been an amazing four years.”

Alicia Espinoza stated, “Being with a variety of girls with different personalities and working with them as a family is a great experience.”

Senior Julissa Mendoza revealed, “We have become so close that we think of each other as family. It’s nice playing with this group of girls because they make the game exciting.”

Many volleyball players think that other people don’t know much about the sport. Senior Prissila Green thinks that skill in volleyball is underrated and that a lot of people think it’s easy, but it’s not. Jessie Simmons says it’s a very hard sport and it looks a lot easier than it is.
