These lockers located outside room 4203, are just for students who have band class.

There is a lot to like about Miami High. Have you ever considered what you like about this school?
The Best

“The best thing is how easy-going the uniform policy is,” said senior Wilbert Bernadeau.

Junior Miguel Laime said that the diversity in the school is the best thing, because it makes it easier to socialize with other people from around the world and learn about different cultures besides your own.

Senior Elizabeth Perera said, “All the activities that we have and being the only school to have a parade for homecoming are the best things about the school.”
The worst

Things can’t always be perfect. So maybe you have thought about the thing that you dislike most about the school. Freshman Bryanna Novoa said, “The worst thing is that even though they make you choose your classes, they still don’t give you the ones you choose.”

Senior Jorge Mosqueda said that there are too many students in the school, and that makes the classes get full of students.

“The fact that the lunch lines are always crowded makes it hard for students to get their food,” said sophomore Jostin Armada.

Feeling Safe

We probably spend more time in school on weekdays than we do at home. Feeling safe in school gives comfort to many students. Senior Josue Rodriguez said, “Our school is a very safe place, because there are a lot of cameras around and visitors have to sign in every time they come inside the school.”

Junior Kerline Momperoussi considers Miami High a safe place, because she has a counselor that can help her whenever she has a problem in school.

Senior Watraie Jones said, “I feel protected in the school, because I always see cops around.”

Making Changes

Students here at MHS would like to see some changes, even though they might be hard to make. Junior Rigoberto Modragon said, “I would change the cafeteria food to more appetizing food like KFC chicken and Popeyes, instead of plain cheese pizza and dry barbecue burgers. This would help us to stay in school with full tummies.”

“I think all students should have lockers to put school materials inside,” said Josue Rodrigues. “This would prevent students from forgetting their school materials at home.”

Senior Irene Alvarez said, “I would extend the amount of time they give us to switch from classes to 8 minutes. This would help students not be late to class and be right on time.”

Miguel Laime would change the temperature inside the classrooms, because this would let students learn in an environment that’s not too cold or too hot.

Can Changes Be Possible?

Could these changes ever happen at Miami High? According to school principal Mr. Valdes, some of them could happen here at school, while others can’t because they have to be managed through the school district.

Regarding the food menu that some students would like to see a change in, assistant principal Mr. Zabala, said, “We have a cafeteria manager, and the food she selects is set by the MDCPS Department of Food and Nutrition, so this is not something we really have control over.”

As for the lockers, Mr. Valdes said, “No more lockers are allowed in school, and we are not the only school that doesn’t have lockers.”

Can the time to switch classes change? “Students are required to have a certain amount of instructional minutes, so we can’t deviate from instructional minutes,” said Mr. Zabala. “We would need a special, big-time approval in order to be able to change that.”

Mr. Zabala also stated that the temperature in the classrooms is monitored by a station downtown at the School Board, and they try to do the best they can to adjust the air that goes inside the classrooms.

While some of these changes would take time, others can’t happen at all, but Mr. Valdes is still willing to take recommendations from the students on how to improve our schoolxdfl;kjhgf
