Secretary for Career Club, member of English Honor Society, Glee club, and Interact, junior Rocio Rodriguez is a high academic achiever with a 3.7 unweighted and a 4.6 weighted GPA. She’s smart, she’s kind, and she stands out from the rest.

High Academic Achiever

Lots of students may wonder: how does she do it? Here is some of her advice: “Pay attention in class in order to understand what is being taught, go to tutoring, and take extra credit opportunities if you need to.”

Rocio has taken 5 AP classes through her high school years, and she’s taking 2 this year, AP Capstone Research and AP Language Composition. “My favorite has been AP Research with Dr. DeNight, mainly because it is very satisfying to conduct a research study that no one has done before.” She also likes how in AP Research she gets to work independently with the guidance of an amazing teacher.

Another favorite class is history.  “I find it interesting how so many people and events have shaped how we live today, and how not too long ago, we lived very differently.”

Rocio says that she has difficult classes, but she knows how to manage. “As long as I know what I am doing, and I do my work, there is no reason why I would consider the classes hard,” she said.

Being a top student, Rocio has thought about careers that are suitable for her. She said, ”I do not know yet which path I will take, but I know that I will take the path I am most passionate about.”

Rocio came to Miami High because she wanted to be a part of the Law Magnet. “Being a lawyer is another career path that I am considering,” she said. So far, her favorite year at the High has been junior year because she enjoys all her classes and she can work at her own pace, rather than slow down because of other students.

Her dream college is any college that benefits her by providing an excellent education, so she does not have a specific dream college. “I want to go to the University of Florida or Santa Fe in Gainesville because they have two majors I’m very passionate about: zoology and classical studies,” she said.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Coming into Miami High as a 11TH grader, Rocio felt like she needed to be part of something, so she felt that clubs were the best thing. Since Miami High offers much variety in clubs, Rocio decided to join different ones throughout the years, Interact, English Honors Society (EHS), Career Club, and Glee Club.

Rocio doesn’t regret joining because she knew that she was going to be part of something special and that it was going to make her high school experience worth it. She was the corresponding secretary of EHS, but she has now become the secretary of the Career Club.

Her favorite part of each club “Is how we feel like a family when we do our club activities,” she said. Her advice to students that are club-less is to join because you are guaranteed to learn and have fun at the same time.

Life Outside of School

Her daily life is pretty simple, she said. When she’s not in school working or participating in clubs, Rocio’s life is pretty average. In her free time Rocio goes out to eat, watches Netflix and Anime, plays video games, or reads.

Born in Cuba on April, 2000, she was partially raised there until she came with her family to the US at 8 years old in 2008. Her family is composed of her mom and dad, her sister, her brother and her puppy Luca. Before coming to Miami High, she attended Auburndale Elementary and Shenandoah Middle School.
