Young people love social media. According to the article “Marketing: 96 Amazing Social Media Statistics and Facts”, posted on the brandwatch.com website, there are 3.5 billion Instagram likes per day and 90% of Instagram users are younger than 35.

Students at Miami High have access to different social media sites such as Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter, but Snapchat seems to be the most popular. Junior Nickolas Garshott said Snapchat is “the most personal way to communicate.”

Junior April Hernandez takes snaps off snapchat and posts them letting people know about her life and what she’s up to on Snapchat.

Sophomore Belmar Hernandez likes how Snapchat has a variety of funny and cute filters. Junior Natalee Guerrero says it’s entertaining to socialize with her friends on Snapchat.

Sophomore Destiny Cortez uses Snapchat whenever she gets tired of scrolling through her newsfeed on Instagram.

Other social media apps are also popular. Junior Mussel Soto loves to look at funny videos off Instagram. Sophomore Enriet Lava enjoys meeting new peers on Instagram. Sophomore Nestor Zungia likes to see people go live on Instagram and see what’s happening.”

Sophomore Christina Guerrero said that the best feature of Twitter is “what’s trending now and in style for our generation.“

Although social media might seem all fun and games, there are ways you can get in trouble. Senior Ricardo de la Cruz said, “There was this one time I commented an emoji on a pretty girl’s picture on Instagram, and my girlfriend got mad at me.”

Senior Cristian Mesa said, “Sometimes girls at school get exposed on it after a bad breakup with their boyfriend or a simple fight with their friend and then it spreads.”

Similarly, junior Ethian Menendez said he has seen a lot of arguments and drama all over social media.

Month after month, the data used by social media keeps adding up. Senior Eraclio Vega said he works so he is the one that must pay $80 a month for all the data he uses.

Junior Rossel Mera said, although his mom is paying for his data, she can’t pay for unlimited, so he has problems with using certain apps on his phone since he barely has data and the posts won’t load all the way through for him to see.

Miami High’s students spend varying amounts of time using social media. For sophomore Andrea Sosa, it’s about an hour a day on Twitter divided up into different parts of the day. Junior Jade Borjas says she spends “10 minutes of each hour of the day” on Twitter. Junior David Gutierrez said, “I spend 2-3 hours on Instagram on and off.”
