Every time I go out, I always see homeless people who are hungry and asking for money to buy food. I always give them a dollar or two because they’re currently going through a rough path in their life. Whenever I give them money, I hope that they use it for good intentions like buying themselves stuff they need.
Knowing that there are people that live in the streets is saddening, especially seeing them in person and their condition. I’ve also seen some people that live under cardboard boxes and rely on those boxes since it’s the only item they can consider safe.
Whenever I see someone that is struggling in life to the point where they don’t even have a place where they can call home, it upsets me because anyone, including myself, can be in their position someday. The way I’d feel if I was in a state where I can’t even afford to buy myself some food would be unhappy. Although I would be sad about not being able to afford anything, I’d still try to get a job and stay at a local Salvation Army shelter. In the meantime, I’d be motivating myself to get up and become a stable person.
We don’t value food as much as we should. There have been times where I’ve seen people throw away their food just because it wasn’t the flavor they expected or they don’t want to carry the burden of having to leave it as leftovers and eat later. There are also influencers known as mukbangers, who eat an exaggerated amount of food and then get caught spitting it all out.
According to the article “How to End World Hunger: 6 Solutions for Zero Hunger,” posted on the website for World Food Program USA, a way to reduce world hunger is by reducing food waste, improving access to food, and speaking out about issues like poverty. Lowering food prices may also help reduce world hunger since most people aren’t financially stable, making it difficult for them to buy products in the food market or take out. We can also focus on children who are homeless by offering them some help, providing them some education, sending them to an adoption center, or anything that can improve their lives.
A way I can help homeless people is by providing them with blankets, serving them a meal, donating to charities and organizations, donating clothes, and being good listener towards them. Most of the time people who are out on the streets barely interact with other people since they’re considered as outsiders. If you have the time to listen to them, it’d be kind since they have no one besides themselves.
I once had an encounter with a man who was outside the Family Dollar when they were closing, and he was in a wheelchair. He began telling my mom and me his life story and how he ended up on the streets. We stayed there listening to him for 30 minutes. When we left, my mom felt bad for him and told me that he probably has no one else to speak with.
I believe we should help those who need our help since they are struggling in life and may be feeling unmotivated to get up. Helping others encourages a mindset of support and cooperation. Anything we give to the homeless can improve their life and make their day. Them knowing that there are still people out in the world willing to help may inspire them to recover and improve their life.
