The Student Government Association (SGA) at Miami High is feeling bittersweet as they close a new chapter to start a new one for the upcoming school year. This year’s officers Nelissa Herrera (President), Dulce Zuniga (1st Vice President), Yanese Ellington (2nd Vice President), Maria Leyva (Treasurer), Daniela Viera (Recording Secretary), and John Chouza (Corresponding Secretary) are proud to have had such a successful school year.
Despite their success, the school year did not start off as smoothly as they would have liked. “We were from different groups, so it made it hard for us to get along,” said Dulce Zuniga. “We then realized our differences is what made SGA so great.”
Dulce stated one of the biggest achievements this year was how successful their community service opportunities were and all the donations they got from other clubs in their drives. “We brought back what SGA is really about, which is the community,” she said.
Next year two of the current officers, Daniela Viera and John Chouza will be promoted to higher positions within the club. Daniela will become President, and John will take on the role of 1st Vice President. They will also be introducing new officers: Yaritza Castañeda (2nd Vice President), Andrew Castillo (Treasurer), Caleb Montenegro (Recording Secretary), and Joselyn Chirino (Corresponding Secretary).
“Next year we would like to have more drives and make more connections with our community. We would like to start working with children’s hospitals like St. Jude and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital,” said Daniela Viera, who wants to make sure SGA will be just as successful next year. “This year we wanted to bring back student court but unfortunately, we didn’t. We’re trying to bring it back next year because we would like to get our senators more involved.”
Over the summer, SGA will be holding meetings with club presidents, vice presidents, and treasurers for the 2025-2026 school year. “We want to make sure every club is aware of what they are getting into, especially because homecoming is right around the corner when the school year starts,” said Daniela. These meetings will ensure that all club leaders are prepared and informed. By laying the groundwork early, SGA hopes to set each club up for a successful and well-organized school year.
