Math Department chairperson Ms. Munguia is proud of the work and effort their students have put into their coursework which was shown in the EOC scores in Algebra 1 and Geometry. They also had a record enrollment in AP Calculus AB and BC this year and were excited to bring AP Statistics back this school year.
In the 2024-25 school year students performed exceptionally well on the EOC exams, especially Geometry, where they saw significant gain scores. This delighted the Math Department because improving the geometry scores was a major goal for the department. Their continued growth in AP enrollment and the return of AP Statistics mark key milestones for them.
The Math Department hopes to continue expanding access to the advanced math courses. They’re particularly aiming to introduce AP Precalculus and offer more Dual Enrollment options. Another important goal they are hoping to achieve is to integrate more SAT prep into Algebra 2 and Precalculus curricula to help students prepare for college entrance exams.
Mr. Pavon deserves recognition for stepping up as the new advisor for Mu Alpha Theta, leading the alliance’s Homecoming efforts, and teaching eight classes (including AP Environmental Science). He also led the Math Department team to a first-place win in the Frost STEM Challenge.
Ms. Izquierdo is getting recognized for being named as “Math Teacher of the Year” for Miami High. She played a major role in the success of the Algebra 1 team through her leadership and collaboration.
One challenge the Math Department went through this year was adapting to the impact of AI on education. With the rise of AI tools, Ms. Munguia pointed out, it became easier for students to submit work they haven’t done themselves. This made it harder for teachers to accurately assess students’ understanding and progress.
The Math Department will be active during summer. Ms. Munguia will be leading an accelerated summer precalculus program for students who excelled in Algebra 2 Honors and want to take AP Calculus the following year. The program runs for one month and covers key precalculus concepts to ensure students are well-prepared for the rigor ahead.
