New Woodshop Teacher
There’s a new Sting in the shop. Mr. Brown, joined the Stingtown family at the beginning of this school year, and he has lots of things planned for his woodshop students.
Mr. Brown may be new to Miami High, but he’s definitely a veteran when it comes to teaching. In his 30th years instructing “Building Trades and Construction” classes in Dade County Public Schools, Mr. Brown taught for 29 years at Carol City Senior High before transferring here.
“I enjoy working with students and teaching them a skill that they can use in life,” he said. He chose to be a woodshop teacher because he enjoys working with his hands.
Miami High is a completely different environment from what Mr. Brown is used to. He says that Miami High is a friendly place to be and work. He describes the students here as polite, and he says that they are willing to learn. He noticed that “students take great pride in their school,” which is something he really likes.
In Mr. Brown’s classes, students can look forward to learning different aspects of construction, and maybe even landing a job in the construction industry. All he asks in return is for students to participate in class and treat each other with respect.
Mr. Brown was born in Concordia, Kansas, where he grew up and went to school. He attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in 1987. After, receiving his degree he moved from Kansas to Florida, for a new experience. Although Miami is a great place, Mr. Brown says that he does sometimes miss the peace and quiet of Kansas.
Yes, Mr. Brown has been a teacher for a many years but before starting his teaching career, he worked at Natural Gas Pipeline, where he says that he did many jobs.
A typical vacation for him is usually traveling back to the Midwest, he said, “where I help my parents, who are getting older, with their home and property.” He has one daughter, whose name is Bianca and a pet rescue dog named Lady.
He says that when he’s not working, he enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Also, during his free time he enjoys automobiles and working around and remodeling his home.
