AP Psychology: Baby Invasion
In Advanced Placement Psychology, students are to create and care for a baby for two weeks!
In October, students who take AP psychology became “parents” and were required to do the baby project.
“For two weeks, students had to bring their created baby to school and have it everywhere with them,” said AP psychology teacher Mrs. Fernandini. “If they could not supervise the child themselves, they needed to rearrange their schedule while they were working.”
Many AP students learned a lot from taking care of their babies. Sophomore Pablo Oseguera said, “It was very tiring and took a lot of time.”
Sophomore Lianet Henriquez said, “It was overwhelming and it made me feel like an actual parent would, I really opened my eyes as to what an actual parent has to do.”
“I learned to not have a kid at this age and to be very careful with who you give your child to because not everyone is trustworthy,” said sophomore Briana Arroliga.
Senior Ronald Dubon, said, “Being a dad is a big responsibility, especially being a teenager.”
The purpose of this project was for the students to have the opportunity to spend time with their “baby” and analyze the growth and development of the baby’s brain, said Mrs. Fernandini.
This baby project relates to the field of developmental psychology which focuses on the development process of human beings, which Mrs. Fernandini describes as, “From womb to tomb,” meaning the process you go through from life to death.
Even though this project was tough for students, there were moments of joy as well. Sophomore Rocio Landaverde said that she really enjoyed caring for the baby with her significant other. Sophomore Marbely Portocarrero stated, “Learning all the stages a baby goes through was pretty interesting.”
