Enter Dr. Yoham’s class, and you will find him calling his teenage students “little girl”, or “little boy”. He always has a look that says, “The world is ending.” He is sarcastic, funny, intelligent, and genuine. Dr. Yoham’s class is one place where students feel really comfortable.
Biology teacher Dr. Yoham, one of the top teachers in the science department, has been teaching science for 20 years. “Miami High is the only school I have taught since 1996 and the only one I want to teach at,” he said.
He mentioned the many advantages about being a teacher such as making a difference in a student’s life through the understanding of science, but it’s not always easy.
“As a teacher you have multiple roles and responsibilities such as helping the student emotionally, understanding the student’s problems, and at the same time disciplining which can be stressful at times,” he said
Apart from being a teacher, Dr. Yoham is also Science Honor Society’s sponsor. “One of the advantages of sponsoring the SHS club is giving students an opportunity to expand their knowledge around other people who equally enjoy science and to develop friendships through the club,” he said.
Being a club sponsor comes with its challenges as well. “Getting students involved and having them step up and take the leadership role can be a bit difficult sometimes, “he said.
A proud and honored biology teacher with many accomplishments and many more to come, Dr. Yoham is also president of the Florida Association of Science Teachers, on the board for the Dade County Science Teacher Association, executive director for that board, as well as an AP Biology mentor for other teachers.
Born in Coral Gables, Dr. Yoham attended Catholic school for elementary, but Coral Park for high school.
Throughout his childhood, just like us students, he had many things he wanted to achieve in the future. One dream was to build an airplane for the Air Force and fly it. Even though he did not accomplish that, he is very proud of his current achievements.
His best childhood memory was traveling with his family, specially going to a family member’s farm in Indiana for vacation. Dr. Yoham has always had a passion for traveling, having visited many different parts of the world including Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Alaska, Canada, and most countries in Europe. After retiring his dream is to travel more.
After school Dr. Yoham goes home every day to his Italian greyhound named Turbo whom he loves very much.
