“Peanut butter jelly time!” blasted through the speakers as hundreds of Miami High students, decked out in hair nets and gloves, lined cafeteria tables and assembled close to 3,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches afterschool on May 23rd. The Student Government Association sponsored this school-wide community service event as a way to support the homeless at Camillus House.

SGA officers were happily surprised by the turnout and end result. “Tons of students participated this time, even more than the last event,” said Pablo Iraheta, referencing the previous PB&J service last February. “Combined with faculty involvement, we far surpassed our goals.”

Any student affiliated with a club was invited to the event. Fellow club members were grouped with one another then given the materials they needed to prepare the sandwiches. Students who stayed the full hour earned five community service hours.

The faculty alone made over a thousand sandwiches.

The group of over 250 students was pitted against a smaller group of faculty members to see who could make the most sandwiches. In the end, the faculty ended up making slightly more. All together, almost 3,000 sandwiches were made which was much more than the original goal of 1000.

Students felt positive about the event. SGA treasurer Brianna Rodgers appreciated how it brought so many people together to help out the community.

Junior Azhar Moihdeen enjoyed it because he got to support a good cause while spending time with his friends.

“The friendly competition must have helped us accomplish so much,” said 2nd VP Genesy Leiva. “Next year, the club aims to host more of these events and continue to invite faculty.”
