Ms. Herrera, an ESOL staff member who came from Cuba when she was little, became a teacher and is very loved by her students. You may wonder why they feel that way. It’s because she helps her students with problems in the classroom and in everyday life, but that’s not all. As she is also Hispanic, she knows about all the issues that many students experience due to the dictatorships and poverty that the governments of many Latin countries, where they come from, generate.  

The Beginning of Her Journey 

    Ms. Herrera lived in Cuba until she was 8 years old with her family and her older sister, with whom she maintains a good relationship.  During her childhood in the 1970’s, the country had fallen under a dreadful communist dictatorship.  Her family was very affected, but they were lucky enough to be able to flee to the United States. 

   When Ms. Herrera received the news that she would be leaving Cuba, she was very excited as the change from living in a small town in Cuba to the capital of Spain was amazing, even more so traveling on a plane for the first time. On the other hand, she was sad that she would leave her grandmother, whom she was very fond of.  

Her Arrival in the United States 

    She traveled to Madrid first as a stopover strategy, since the main objective was to travel to Miami, but at that time the Cuban government did not allow direct flights from Cuba to the United States. Therefore, it was necessary to travel to Spain before. She then lived in Spain for two years.   

    Ms. Herrera says that she arrived in Miami when she was 11 years old, the same year her younger sister was born.  She mentioned that she did not notice much difference between Miami and Madrid, she was not so surprised after the change of city, even though the change from Cuba to Spain was quite incredible, according to her experience.    

When she first arrived in the United States, Ms. Herrera did not know much of the language, but she had no problems learning it. She added that of the cities in which she has lived, she likes Miami the most, since according to her, “The United States is the greatest country in the world to live.”   

   Ms. Herrera says that in the 1970’s the education in Miami was very different for ESOL students than it is now. Now, students are more supported. The schools she attended in elementary school are Kinloch Park and Caribbean Elementary.  For middle school, she attended Mays and West Miami Middle School; Miami Coral Park for high school and lastly, she went to Florida International University (FIU). 

Her Life as a Teacher 

   Ms. Herrera said that she was able to do different things with her life. She also added that she loves helping students in need and teaching them about the many and varied opportunities available to them. 

   She began her career in education as a primary and then secondary teacher.  She taught Intensive Reading at Nautilus Middle, and Miami High. She then moved on to ESOL. Today, Ms. Herrera loves this group of students as she finds her ESOL children very attentive and eager to learn as well as sweet.  She also likes that she can help and support them with their education and life goals.   

   Ms. Herrera says that in her 20 years as a teacher, she has never regretted her decisions, because “seeing how my students progress is beautiful.  Knowing that you helped that student progress is the best feeling a teacher can feel.”  

Ms. Herrera as a Mother 

  Ms. Herrera’s son, Osmin, attended Miami Senior High for two years.  He went on to graduate Cum Laude from the School for Advanced Studies in 2010.  She is very grateful to the Miami-Dade County Public School System for her son’s superb education and assistance.  He started pre-school with a disability, speech, and language delayed. Thanks to all the support that he received, as well as his efforts, he is now a doctor of medicine. He is doing his internship at St Vincent’s in Erie, Pennsylvania, and he’s happily married and has two young children.

  La Ms. Herrera, una maestra de ESOL que vino de Cuba cuando era pequeña, se convirtió en maestra y es muy querida por sus alumnos. Usted puede preguntarse por qué. Es porque ayuda a sus alumnos con problemas en el aula y en la vida cotidiana, y eso no es todo. Como también es hispana, conoce todos los problemas que experimentan muchos estudiantes debido a las dictaduras y la pobreza que generan los gobiernos de muchos países latinos. 

   Ms. Herrera vivió en Cuba hasta los 8 años con su familia y hermana menor, con la cual  mantienen una buena relación. Durante su infancia en los años 70, el país cayó bajo una gran dictadura. Su familia se vio afectata por esta tirania y fueron forzados a emigrar a los Estados Unidos. 

  Cuando recibió la noticia que dejaría Cuba se emocionó mucho ya que el cambio de vivir en un pueblo de Cuba a la capital de España era asombroso, incluso mas viajar en un avion por primera vez. Por otro lado, estaba triste porque dejaría a su abuelita, a la cual le tenía mucho aprecio.   

Su Llegada a Estados Unidos   

   Viajo a Madrid primero como estrategia de escala, ya que el objetivo principal era viajar hacia Miami, pero en esos momentos el gobierno de Cuba no permitia viajes directos de Cuba a Miami. Era necesario viajar a un tercer pais.  Vivio en España por dos años.     

   Ms. Herrera dice que llegó a Miami a los 11 años,  el mismo año en el que nació su otra hermana. Mencionó que no notaba mucha diferencia entre Miami y Madrid, tampoco se asombró tanto luego del cambio de ciudad, a pesar de que el cambio de Cuba a España fue bastante increíble, según su experiencia.  

   Al principio de llegar a Estados Unidos, Ms. Herrera no conocía mucho del idioma, pero no tuvo problemas a la hora de aprenderlo.     

   Añadió que de las ciudades en las que ha vivido, Madrid le gustó más, ya que según ella “las personas eran más amistosas y la cultura era más interesante, mientras que las personas en Miami no eran tan amistosas.”   

   Ms.Herrera dice que en el años 70 la educacion de para estudiantes de Segundo idioma era muy diferente. Ahora los estudiantes tienen mas apoyo.  

   Las escuelas a las que ella asistio en primaria son Kinloch Park, Caribbean Elementary  en secundaria Mays Middle y West Miami Middle, pre-universitario Miami Coral Park y por ultimo fue a la Universidad Internacional de la Florida (FIU).  

Su Vida Como Maestra  

   Ms. Herrera dijo que pudo hacer diferentes cosas con su vida, pero que nunca “sabes cómo puedes ayudar a una persona.” También añadió que le encanta ayudar a las personas que lo necesiten y enseñarles sobre las oportunidades que estan disponibles para ellos.  

  Comenzó su carrera en educación siendo maestra de primaria y después de secundaria. Luego empezó con una clase de lectura al llegar al pre-universitario Miami Senior High, donde luego de dar  clases de lectura intensiva, se transfirio a de ESOL. Hoy en dia, a Ms. Herrera le encanta esta clase ya que los niños de ESOL le parecen  que quieren aprender, son buenos estudiantes ademas de dulces. También le gusta que los puede ayudar con su educación y apoyarlos en lo necesario.  

   Ms. Herrera dice que en ninguno de los 20 años que lleva siendo maestra se ha  arrepentido de sus decisiones, porque “ver cómo mis estudiantes progresan es hermoso. Saber que ayudaste para que ese estudiante progresara es la mejor sensación que un maestro puede sentir.”  

  Ms. Herrera Como Madre 

   Ms.Herrera esta muy agradecida con el sistema educativo de las escuelas publicas de Miami-Dade County  por la ayuda que recibio su hijo Osmin.  El asistio a Miami High por dos años. Despues se graduo Cum Laude de School for Advanced Studies (Escuela para Estudios Avanzados).  El empezo pre-escolar con un problema de tardanza en el habla. Gracias a los recursos proveidos por el sistema escolar, sus maestros y esfuerzo propio, triunfo.  Hoy en dia es medico y trabaja en St. Vincent’s en Erie, Pennsylvania.  Esta felizmente casado y tienes dos lindos bebes.
