At the beginning of the year, I felt that Mr. Euceda’s class was very boring and also very difficult. But then he started to make all the students socialize with him, and he also started to make more jokes and have fun, and I liked his class more and more because we started to discuss different topics and these topics make me think a lot more helping me develop more knowledge.

The Immigrant

Mr. Euceda is an ESOL teacher who immigrated from Honduras to the United States in 1964 when he was 6 years old. The reason he emigrated was because his mother was unemployed as a teacher after she became pregnant. She wanted a better future for him, but unfortunately, in Honduras he was not going to be able to have a good future because the country was falling into poverty and the education system in Honduras was not that good.

When Mr. Euceda arrived in the United States, he did not know any English. He felt a big difference was not having his great-grandmother in the U.S. He had lived with her since he was 4 years old, and at that time his great-grandmother was everything to him. After living in the United States for 1 year, he began to adjust to his new life—all while, not forgetting his great-grandmother.

The ESOL Instructor

Mr. Euceda began teaching English to different people who wanted to know a different language, and he began to like it so he decided to enroll in a university to do a master’s degree in English. He says that if he had not been a teacher, he would have been a soldier.

Mr. Euceda says, “The best thing about being a teacher is that I help a fellow human being. I is very rewarding when I see ESOL students walk into my class and leave with a great deal of academic knowledge as well as 21st century skills that will help them once they graduate and enter college or the world of work.”

The Master Teacher

Mr. Euceda does not consider himself a teacher but rather a guide or facilitator and firmly believes that he is excellent at what he does. But the most important thing is that he considers himself a human being who wants to help other people learn English so that others can fulfill their dreams.

In this way Mr. Euceda helps his students by providing a rich and rigorous learning environment that emphasizes 21st century skills. These skills are critical thinking and problem-solving skills that foster independent thinking.

Additionally, he helps students develop their leadership skills through collaboration and team building. He said, “I highlight the importance of having effective communication skills through the development and practice of morphology and syntax.” All of this, he believes, is how he contributes to the linguistic development of his students.

Mr. Euceda’s main hobby is to teach some Central American teachers to speak English so that the teachers can teach the same to their students. 

The Father

Mr. Euceda has 2 children, a girl, and a boy. He says that he has a very good relationship with them children, but there are also times when it gets a little difficult, like any relationship between any father and his children.

   Al principio del año sentí que la clase del Mr. Euceda era muy aburrida y también muy difícil. Pero luego comenzó a hacer que todos los estudiantes socializaran con él y también comenzó a hacer un poco más de bromas y la clase era mas divertida y me gustaba su clase cada vez más porque comenzamos a ver diferentes temas y estos temas me hacían pensar mucho más y así cada vez desarrollo más mis conocimientos. 

Mr. Euceda como inmigrante 

   Mr. Euceda es un maestro de ESOL que emigró de Honduras a los Estados Unidos en el año 1964 cuando tenía 6 años. La razón por la cual emigró fue porque su madre fue desempleada como profesora por haber salido embarazada. Ella quería un mejor futuro para él, pero lamentablemente, en Honduras no iba a poder tener un buen futuro porque el país estaba caído en la pobreza y la educación en este país no era tan buena. 

   Cuando Mr. Euceda  llegó a Estados Unidos no sabía nada de ingles. El sentía una gran diferencia era que no tenía a su bizabuela con quien vivía desde los 4 años y en ese tiempo su bizabuela lo era todo para él. Cuando llevaba 1 año viviendo en Estados Unidos, comenzó a adaptarse a vivir en los Estados Unidos—todo esto, sin olvidar a su bizabuela. 

Su vida como profesor  

   Así fue como Mr. Euceda empezó a enseñar inglés a diferentes personas que querian saber de un idioma diferente pero luego le empezó a gustar y decidió matricularse en una universidad para hacer una maestría en inglés. Dice que si no hubiera sido maestro hubiera sido soldado. 

   Mr. Euceda no se considera un maestro sino un guía o facilitador y cree firmemente que es excelente en lo que hace. Pero lo más importante es que se considera un ser humano que quiere ayudar a otras personas aprender inglés para que otros puedan cumplir sus sueños. 

   De esta forma Mr. Euceda ayuda a sus estudiantes el proporciona un entorno de aprendizaje rico y riguroso en el que hace hincapié en las habilidades del siglo XXI. Estas habilidades son habilidades de pensamiento crítico y resolución de problemas que fomentarán el pensamiento independiente.  

     Además, ayuda a los estudiantes a desarrollar sus habilidades de liderazgo a través de la colaboración y la creación de equipos. Adicionalmente, Mr. Euceda resaltó la importancia de tener habilidades comunicativas efectivas a través del desarrollo y práctica de la morfología y la sintaxis. Todo lo anterior, cree que es como contribuye al desarrollo lingüístico de sus estudiantes. 

   Mr. Euceda dice, “Lo mejor de ser profesor es que ayudo a un prójimo y es muy gratificante cuando veo que los estudiantes de ESOL entrando en mi clase y se van con una gran cantidad de conocimientos académicos, así como con las habilidades del siglo XXI que los ayudarán una vez que se gradúen e ingresen a la universidad o al mundo laboral”. 

   A parte de su trabajo en Miami High, a Mr. Euceda le gusta enseñar a algunos maestros centroamericanos a hablar inglés para que los maestros puedan enseñar lo mismo a sus alumnos. 

Mr.Euceda como padre 

   Mr. Euceda tiene 2 hijos, una niña y un niño. Dice que tiene muy buena relación con sus hijos, pero también hay momentos en que se pone un poco difícil, como cualquier relación entre padre e hijos.
