Spanish National Honor Society reflects on their first year
May 30, 2023
For the first time in 6 years, Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS) is back at Miami High, and their first year was certainly a tough but successful year. The club was reactivated by junior Rocio Pelaez as President and Dr. DeNight as sponsor for the club. The focus of this year was to gain members and get the club back on the map and show Miami High that SNHS has returned.
In their first year back, the club established a tradition of sharing cultural presentations during biweekly meetings, where members would present a topic related to Spanish culture. Jasmine Godoy presented about Honduras, Jayred Velazquez spoke about Nicaragua, and Luca Passalacqua presented about Colombia and also brought “pan de bono” to share with club members. Any student can join to learn more about Spanish culture around the world.
Another activity SNHS did was decorating the door of club sponsor Mr. DeNight’s classroom with a portrait of Celia Cruz, a Cuban singer who influenced Spanish culture with her music. Historians Maria Leyva and Andrea Didonato worked on decorating the door and did an excellent job.
As for next year, the goals for SNHS are to grow even more, with President Rocio Pelaez stating, “My goals for the club include growing in membership and visibility throughout the school.” Another goal is to begin hosting Hispanic workshops, socials, shows, and other after school activities. Rocio will be assisted with her mission by officers Stephanie Romero, Jasmine Godoy, Luca Passalacqua, Issabela Martinez, Maria Leyva, Andrea Didonato, and Ashley Ramos. With a new year on the horizon, things are only looking up for SNHS.
