In every school, there’s always different opinions on which subject is either the best or the worst, but it would be more interesting if we went towards the negative and saw what the worst subject is at Miami High.
As you know, the first subjects that come to mind would be the core classes in school since that’s usually where most of those negative opinions go towards. For instance, sophomore Jawa Johnson explains, “I would say English or math because I really don’t like reading and how uninteresting it is, and math is just too difficult for me to understand.”
Another example comes from junior Laila Taylor who states, “I really don’t enjoy English because I put forth more effort than I’m willing on writing most essays, and I can’t stand the idea of continuously doing section after section of reading.”
Finally, sophomore Yiry Pierresaint says, “I think chemistry is harder and you put more effort. I feel like the teacher is fine at explaining it, but it is still hard to understand everything at first.”
In general, every class has its own advantages and disadvantages—even the teachers play a role in that. But what matters is how to improve those problems. Sophomore Nicholas states, “In my opinion, what makes a class fun is the type of class. I can’t imagine any core classes being fun but an elective yes, but a teacher’s personality is important as well.”
Having a subject that a student doesn’t enjoy is normal, but have you ever thought what subjects your teachers disliked? Math teacher Mr. Strickland states, “I wouldn’t exactly say that I necessarily hate a subject. I think it is the teachers I didn’t get along with, so some teachers, just like here that students don’t enjoy. It wasn’t necessarily a subject, but a teacher that I can gravitate towards or be chill with or learn or the opposite.”
This can also go towards another scenario where a student’s behavior doesn’t get affected if their favorite teacher teaches their personal least liked subject. One example comes from junior Angelo Pedre who said, “If I got my favorite teacher next year but with a subject I didn’t like, I will still put effort because I don’t want to disappoint them and I respect them as well, so the subject doesn’t matter to me when it comes to that.”
Imagine yourself as a teacher. Everyone has their way of teaching, so how would you be fair with that, but also dealing with someone that doesn’t enjoy your subject? Theatre teacher Ms. Fernandez states, “I have loved theater ever since middle school, and I wouldn’t want to teach any of the boring subjects. I think theater is fun, interactive, and it really becomes a safe place for students to be themselves. And for students that don’t enjoy my subject, I tend to try my best to talk to them or make them laugh so that they can eventually get used to it and participate as well.”
