Social studies department chair Ms. Yanes is happy to report on the many successes of the social studies department for the 2023-2024 school year. First, she says how this school year was better compared to last year because Mr. Hampton returned to the department from paternity leave. She also states, “The teachers felt very supported by administration.” The school year began like other years, with high expectations, lots of work, dedication, and “high anticipation from the teachers that the students will perform well,” states Ms. Yanes.
She also reports that Ms. Perez’s debate team competed in the national debate competition, the U.S. history teachers continue to have a great passing percentage on the EOC, and government teachers had a 71% passing rate on the Florida Civic Literacy Exam (FCLE). She states, “Miami High has one of the highest passing rates in the district.” In spite of that success, there was also a big challenge faced this year: The FCLE exam took place on the first week of November, so government teachers had to teach a whole semester in less than six weeks.
According to Ms. Yanes, the social studies department is planning to have an end-of-year luncheon, and for summer, the teachers will be attending Professional Development days for new textbooks and curricula. Seniors who failed their core social studies class (government/economics) will retake it during the summer to receive their diploma. As for the 2024-2025 school year, Ms. Yanes states, “The only plan is to keep on improving!”
