At Miami High, your senior year is full of many activities, but who are the people behind all of these events? We like to call this group of people the “Activities Crew”. One person that stands out in the “Activities Crew” is Jonathan Matute. In his four years at Miami High, Jonathan has accomplished many things. His achievements are not just based on extracurricular activities but academic ones as well.
Extracurriculars
Jonathan Matute, the Senior Class President, has been involved in extracurricular activities since his freshman year. Aside from being a class officer, Jonathan holds an officer position in two other clubs: Circolo Italiano and F.E.A. Additionally, Jonathan is a proud member of BETA, NHS, and MAO.
As a class officer, he said he loves meeting new people and becoming friends with them. “I am so grateful to have met my best friend Stephanie Fortozo who is the current Junior Class corresponding secretary,” he said. “If I wasn’t an officer, I would have never met her, so I’m very grateful.” As a class officer, Jonathan has the privilege of knowing about events and activities in the school before they are announced to the rest of the student body, which he says he also enjoys.
Jonathan says he’s learned many valuable skills from his time as a class officer including time management and organizational skills. “I also learned the importance of having a calendar,” he stated, adding that he would die without his calendar and that he owns three of them.
Academics
Despite being incredibly busy with extracurricular activities, Jonathan does not let that affect his academic career. Jonathan currently sits in the top 1% of his class and was awarded a full ride to Boston College through Questbridge, a highly selective academic scholarship in which he was one of 2,627 finalists in the world and one of 5 finalists in Miami High.
Jonathan has taken a multitude of rigorous classes including AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Research, AP Seminar, AP English Language, ENC 1101 and a dual enrollment Microeconomics class. He is currently taking AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC, AP Environmental Science, and ENC 1102. He has ended all his courses with an “A” and has passed all his AP exams.
Jonathan said his favorite class was AP Seminar. “I had so much fun coming up with my own research project,” he said, “and I also formed genuine connections with some people in the class.” He also loved the overall environment of AP Seminar.
Family
Jonathan is very close to his family and stated that one thing he’ll miss when he moves to Boston is their weekly family dinner where they have the opportunity to catch up with each other. He said he’ll miss all his family, but he’ll miss his older sister Maryory the most. “I can always tell her everything, and I’m going to miss that for sure,” he said.
Jonathan says that his family has always been supportive of what he does at Miami High. “My sister was in Color Guard, so they’re used to us not being at home for a long period of time,” he said. Jonathan highlights that even though his parents are aware of his busy schedule, they tend to be surprised when he is busier than they are.
Hobbies
Even though he has such a busy schedule, Jonathan makes sure to always have time for himself. “I enjoy watching movies, going out to eat with my friends, and scrolling on TikTok,” he said.
Jonathan has also taken a special interest in photography. “It all started when I bought a disposable camera to capture memories from the homecoming we planned,” he said. “I ended up really liking the pictures and decided to start buying more disposable cameras.” Jonathan says he ended up investing in a digital camera as continuously buying disposable cameras and getting the pictures developed was becoming very costly. Although Jonathan does not plan to pursue a career in photography, he does plan to continue capturing his life through the lens of his camera.
