It’s debatable if the school’s uniform policy at Miami High is fair or not. Some people say that it’s fair compared to other schools, but some say that we should be able to wear whatever we want.
Junior Jose Erazo says, “To an extent I see why we need uniform, but at the same time I feel like the best thing about being a teenager is expression, and our fashion is a way that we express ourselves. To meet the needs of the student’s, the school should be more lenient.”
Another junior Livan Lopez says, “There can be some changes to the uniform policy. Especially when it starts to get cold, students should be able to wear sweatpants because the jeans don’t provide enough warmth; not all pants are made to isolate heat.”
11th grader Manny Lopez says “The administration can change the uniform to make the students like it more by letting us wear whatever pants or shirt, not just jeans and polo shirts. Sometimes they get uncomfortable, but if we could wear our sweatpants or a normal T-Shirt, we’d be more satisfied.”
Some students say that the uniform policy is not fair to everyone. Junior Nicole Rodriguez says, “I think the school dress code is unfair because they let skinny girls wear short shorts and let them be but when they see a chubby girl wearing shorts, they send them to CSI and get them dress coded.”
Rachel Martinez, another junior, says, “The rule of the Crocs is having to wear the safety strap behind your foot, which they call Safe Croc-ing, which I think is stupid. I’m glad we get to wear Crocs but why apply that rule so much?”
Mariham Ara, an 11th grader, says, “Compared to other schools I think it’s unfair we can’t wear ripped jeans, sweatpants, or black jeans. What is the difference from normal jeans and black jeans?”
Wearing a school uniform can impact a student’s self-esteem both positively and negatively. It can make people either fit in or make people feel isolated. Forcing everybody to wear the same thing blocks creativity and personal identity. Junior Boris Borge says, “The school uniform makes me feel suppressed in a way because personally I have a lot of style, but I can’t show that in school because of the rules and I don’t want to go to CSI for it. Out of school I have a good sense of fashion, and I wish I could show that in school.”
Students should be able to express themselves through their clothing as it creates confidence and comfort for a person. On the other hand, senior Angel Rosales says, “The school uniform makes people or at least me have a sense of belonging and school spirit. It makes me feel in place.”
school uniform fair compared to other schools
Compared to other schools, some say Miami high uniform policy is fair like Jeleanys Oquendo says, “Miami High really doesn’t have a strict uniform. It’s just jeans and polo shirts, but it’s not really enforced so much. Other schools have a school dress code like wearing a polo shirt with the school’s logo, no jeans, and no shorts, so compared to other schools it’s not as bad. It’s a tolerable dress code.”
