How does Flavia do it all?

You see her with her cheerleading uniform one day, you see her with her class jersey the next day, and you see her with her Beta jersey the following day. She is senior Flavia Trujillo, the captain of the cheerleading team, Class of 16 treasurer, and Beta corresponding secretary.

How does she do it all? “I really don’t have much of a personal life. I basically live at Miami High,” she said. “It’s never affected me in my academics because I have always done my homework. To be honest, I have no idea how I manage to have time for anybody or anything. My schedule is so crazy sometimes I get home at 7 p.m., shower, do my homework, and then I fall asleep.”

It takes a lot of effort to be so active in school, but Flavia loves the hard work. “You have to have a certain mind set on doing it, and I really don’t think that there are a lot of people that can handle or juggle a lot of things at the same time because it’s really hard and very stressful sometimes,” she said. “It actually pushes me to do well in school because you have to have a specific GPA to be in cheerleading and in Beta. No matter what I do, my grades never went down I have been a cheerleading officer since my sophomore year and it actually pushed me to do better because people on my team looked up to me to show a good example in my class work.”

Cheerleading Captain

She always wanted to join the cheerleading team because it is something that always caught her attention. “My dream ever since freshman year was to be captain for my senior year because I wanted to make senior year the best for the cheerleading team,” she said. “I am the one who is supposed to set rules and regulations and to guide them in any way possible during practice.”

Flavia has been cheering for 7 years and her expectations for her squad are very high. “They have a lot of potential and they will be successful by the end of this year,” she said.

There’s always going to be problems when you have 16 girls on a team, but it’s nothing Flavia can’t handle. “They are minor things,” she said. “The only downfall of being in cheerleading is that I basically don’t have any type of summer vacation.”

Class Treasurer

Another one of her goal since freshman year was to be a class officer which she finally accomplished her senior year. Flavia loves being the class treasurer. “I like to be involved with my class and to know things in advance,” she said.

“The hardest part of being class treasurer is making sure you don’t get the paperwork wrong. If you do, the school treasurer Mr. Portuondo will get mad. I really don’t think there’s an easy part about being a treasurer. Money is the trickiest thing. Not only do you have to deal with Mr. Portuondo, but you have to deal with all the cash and the receipts,” she said.

BETA Corresponding Secretary

Flavia has been very involved in Beta since freshman year. “They were the first ones to come up to me during school and told me to join, and they were the only ones I got along with, so ever since then, I have wanted to run for an officer position, but I never took advantage of the opportunity to run,” she said.

Flavia wanted senior year in Beta to be amazing so that’s why she ran for Beta’s corresponding secretary. She said, “I like being part of a family other than cheerleading. I’m in charge of making sure the roster is updated.”

Personal life

Born on December 9, 1996, in Mercy Hospital, Flavia went to Charles Hadley, St. Matthews, and Auburndale for elementary school and to Shenandoah for middle school.

She would love to go to UCF (University of Central Florida) but she probably won’t go because “I’m very family oriented so I will be applying to FIU (Florida International University),” said Flavia.

She wants to study family law. “I’m one of those people that likes to fight for people when they can’t fight for themselves, and I want to follow in the footsteps of my aunt and uncle who are lawyers.”
