There are people that procrastinate, do nothing, and waste their lives away; John Gonzalez isn’t one of them.

John could’ve gone to any high school he wanted, but he chose Miami High. Why? “Miami High seemed like a fun and very spirited school, and I wasn’t wrong,” said John whose family members are Miami High alumni and loved their time here.

SGA

Newly elected as SGA’s recording secretary for the next school year, John wanted to run because he loves to help out the school and participate in school events. “Being in SGA will help me do a little more,” he said. John said that he is honored that he won the election and wishes the best for his opponent.

John gave out a ridiculous amount of cupcakes and candy to win votes, along with printing out hundreds of campaign posters and posting them all over the school. Coming up with poster designs was no easy feat. He had to make sure people knew who he was and also make it memorable.

Since the day he showed SGA advisor Ms. Puentes his campaign posters, he had a strong feeling he’d win. He says his posters, which all had a photograph of him, were “the bomb” and he was super nice to people, so he knew he’d get their votes.  He also reached out to the kids that only spoke Spanish.

Italian Club

John loves being vice president of the Italian club. “Being in Circolo Italiano is great because we learn about Italian culture and that’s something I’m interested in. Also when we tag new members, we have pizza and that’s lit,” he said. He says the job is nice and simple. He just has to go to IOC meetings and spread the latest news to the Italian club members.  He is fine with going to the meetings because he always finds out information first.

Interact

For Interact, John is one of the treasurers, a job which he says is fun yet challenging because he has to deal with every single penny given to him. If he loses any of it, it’s all on him. The best part of being treasurer, however, is that he gets to host fund raisers such as car washes and bake sales.

He loves being in Interact. “We’re all like one big family and all care about each other,” he says.  Being in Interact impacts his life in a mostly positive way; he just doesn’t like having to stay after school sometimes.

The Past

On September 20th 1999 in Havana, Cuba, John Gonzalez was brought into the world. At age 7, he came to Miami with only his mother and a wonder for the future.

John has a lot of siblings: two older half-sisters in Cuba from his dad’s side, a little half-brother in America from his dad’s side, a little half-sister and a stepsister from his mother’s new marriage.

He went to Kensington Park Elementary as a young child and learned English fluently in his time there. He also went to Shenandoah Middle.

Sometimes he misses Cuba because many of his family members are there, but he’s glad to be here because he has more freedom and opportunities.

The Future

John plans to go somewhere far for college, maybe California. He’s not exactly sure which college he wants to go to but he has faith he’ll end up somewhere good. “Shoot for the moon; even if you miss, you will land among the stars,” is how John sees it. John would also love to be a pediatrician.  He loves children and would like to work with them.
