Roadway Ahead

Have you gotten to school late in the past month? Are you getting tired of having to rush in the morning because of traffic? Well, you’re not alone!

Many students are being affected by the construction on Flagler Street right in front of our school. This may affect students that drive to school because the street that is blocked is right next to the student parking lot.

Sophomore Marbely Portocarrero said, “Driving to school is fun until I have to enter the parking lot and the cars don’t let me pass.”

Assistant principal Mr. Zabala said students will be punished for coming in late despite the traffic and the school rules will always remain the same.

Sophomore Shantel Chavarria says that she gets in trouble with her first period teacher for coming in one minute after the bell. Although she is almost never late to school, this traffic jam is costing her having perfect attendance.

“There’s a lot of traffic and it takes up time which makes me late sometimes,” said sophomore Sherly Castro.

It’s not just students being affected.    English teacher Ms. Alicia Rodriguez said, “It affects me tremendously because I have to wake up earlier and it makes me late.”

History teacher Ms. Albornoz said, “On my way to school it doesn’t affect me because I get off on another route, but leaving school, the traffic gets really busy.”

Similarly, Rocio Landaverde, a sophomore, said, “The construction does not affect me when I come to school, but when I leave school I can’t seem to find my Uber driver.”

On the other hand, some people aren’t being affected by it at all. Sophomore Sa’Hira Acevedo said, “It doesn’t affect me because my bus driver goes around the construction not interfering with it.”

You may ask yourself “When will this end?” According to the Flagler Street website from the Downtown Development Authority <http://www.flaglerstreetmiami.com>, it won’t end until summer of 2018.   There are 13 phases to completing the remodeling of this street, and so far they’ve only completed phase 1 and 2.

The only solution to this problem is waking up earlier to avoid any type of traffic and be in school on time. If waking up early isn’t your thing, then just go around the traffic and take another route.
