Be on the Hueck!

“Water Polo is the stamina of a marathon, the contact of hockey, and the strategy of chess.”

Alvaro Espinoza-Hueck is a clever individual that could’ve attended any high school, yet he chose Miami High because he believed it was a perfect fit for him. He has a deep sense of pride for Miami High because he has been coming to this school since 4th grade.

Life as a Student

With an unweighted GPA of 3.8 and weighted 4.6, he is currently taking 3 AP classes: AP Chemistry, AP Capstone Research, and AP U.S. History. Though he has a remarkable GPA, Alvaro can still struggle with his classes. “AP Research challenges me to think outside of the box, and the deadlines also make it a challenge,” he said.

He is passionate about math and history. “I love solving equations. People think I’m crazy, but the longest ones that actually make you work for the answer are my favorite ones,” he said. “And I love history because it keeps me knowledgeable about the past and as JFK said, ‘Without the past, we are certain to miss the future.’”

Unlike most of the Miami High population he attends a school with his twin sister, Ingrid Espinoza-Hueck, and uncle, Dr. Erick Hueck, science department chairperson. He doesn’t think much of it though; he says he sees them every day anyway.

Clubs and Sports

Aside from having a jaw-dropping GPA, Alvaro is a very involved person in school, a member of the following clubs: HHS, EHS, SHS, MAO, BETA, LLHS, and NHS. He is the treasurer for Historical Honor Society (HHS) and the president of Science Honor Society (SHS). As HHS treasurer, he has to make sure all members pay their fees. As SHS president, he leads meetings and guides the other officers in doing their jobs.

He is also an athlete on the swimming and water polo teams. For him, to be in water polo, you must be dedicated. “It takes hard work, determination and strong lungs,” he said.

With clubs, sports, and classes, he is a busy person. “I don’t even know how I’m still sane at this point, but I try to do things one at a time so I don’t overwhelm myself too much,” he said.

Class of 2018 Vice-President

He ran for VP of the Class of 2018 both at the end of freshman year and sophomore year and successfully acquired the position. “I ran for VP because I’ve always wanted to have a leadership position,” he said, “and VP was a good place to start.”

As class VP he must attend the I.O.C. meetings and transfer what they discussed there to the whole class. Alvaro likes the people that are part of the junior class board, but doesn’t like how the VP has only the responsibility of attending I.O.C. meetings.

Personal Life

Alvaro was born on October 26, 1999, at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach. He spent his elementary and middle school years at Coral Way K-8 Center.

He wishes to take corporate law as a career because it has an excellent salary, and also allows him to work with businesses and travel around the world. Though he is just a junior, his university interests include Princeton, UF, Harvard, and Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida.
