Lives of Teachers Outside the School

 

We all know who our teachers are during school, but what about outside of school? What do you think they like to do?

Some teachers have other work to do outside of teaching at Miami High. Science teacher Mr. Yoham is part of two science boards: The Florida Association of Science Teachers, where he is the President, and Dade County Science Teachers Association, where he is the Executive Director.

English teacher Ms. Delicata is a full-time graduate school student in Education at Johns Hopkins University.

Physical education teacher Mr. Perlett has a part-time job as a personal trainer, plus he teaches Elementary Health and Physical Education concepts to elementary ed. and physical education majors at the FIU.

On the weekends, ESOL teacher Ms. Herrera tries to take a break from school; she loves to read and watch Investigation Discovery, Lifetime and Discovery Channel. Developmental language arts teacher Ms. Guerra likes to read, do yoga and watch YouTube makeup tutorials. Ms. Delicata likes to bike ride and considers herself a huge film girl. Math teacher Mr. Strickland likes to rest, relax and watch TV. Ms. Ransom spends time with her family, goes to her daughter’s soccer games and loves to read.

Ms. Cid considers herself a foodie, who likes to try new food in new restaurants, while Ms. Guerra likes to try out new baking recipes.

Some teachers love to spend time outside. Mr. Perlett likes to go fishing, hiking and bike riding. Ms. Delicata likes exploring new beaches and outdoor spaces in Miami, hiking, and camping. Geometry teacher Mr. Perez likes to go bike riding too.

Many teachers enjoy playing sports. Ms. Ransom, who has been teaching English for 22 years, won a college scholarship for diving to Michigan University. French teacher Mr. Fertil, and Ms. Delicata both love to play soccer. Longtime substitute teacher Mr. Baumgartem, Sr. has a basketball team, that he has been playing together with for the past 30 years.

Teachers, like students, also enjoy their summer vacations. Some like Mr. Yoham, who has been teaching science for 21 years, relax by going up North,where he visited Vancouver, Canada, and then took a cruise to Alaska were he went dog sledding.

Many teachers travel outside the USA. US history teacher Ms. Perez, who always tries to visit a different country, has been to China, Thailand, Italy, Spain, Argentina among others.

Every year geometry teacher Mr. Perez visits Europe as part of his summer vacations. Mr. Fertil has taken cruises with his family to Bahamas, Mexico, Jamaica and Haiti.

Mr. Del Campo, who works with the special education department, goes to France to visit his brother and spend time with his niece.

Other teachers like to travel inside the country. Ms. Ransom has traveled from coast to coast with her family, visiting San Francisco and San Diego in California, and also spending some time in Tallahassee. ESOL teacher Ms. Herrera spent a week with her husband in Siesta Key, here in Florida..

Teachers also have their favorite singers and actors. Ms. Cid likes the acapella band Pentatonix, and Ms. Guerra likes Esperanza Spalding, John Coltrane, Kayne West and Sia. Geometry teacher Mr. Perez likes James Franco and the singer Eros Ramazzotti. Math teacher Mr. Strickland listening to Anita Baker and Slade. US history teacher Ms. Perez likes the rapper Common, and the actor Jim Carrey.  Ms. Herrera likes the singers Adele and Bruno Mars, while French teacher Mr. Fertil likes reggae and gospel music.
