You might catch her saying, “Everything is connected,” and “Omg! I love you!” Romantic, talented, and intelligent, senior Jamilee Yern is known for the love and light she carries in the Miami Senior High hallways.

Academic Life

Jamilee is one of the top seniors in her class with a 3.8 unweighted and 4.7 weighted GPA. She has taken seven AP classes at Miami High including AP Research, AP Seminar, AP Biology, AP Spanish Language, AP English Language, and she is currently taking AP Macroeconomics.

“My most difficult class this year is AP Macroeconomics because it’s a class where you really have to connect and visualize the concepts. You distract yourself for one second, and you miss a big chunk. It really isn’t about memorization, but truly grasping the concept,” states Jamilee.

She has won several academic awards, including the Mount Holyoke Book Award her junior year. This year Jamilee was a finalist for the Posse Foundation scholarship, but she later declined the offer because she realized she wanted to stay close to home. Jamilee, however, encourages students at Miami High to consider applying for Posse because it’s a great opportunity and a full-paid ride to college.

During, the summer, Jamilee spent most of her time at the University of Miami, her dream school, where she got the opportunity to attend their eight-week academic program for medicine, and she loved it.

“Not only did I expand my connections with the UM staff,” she said, “but I also saw cadavers and had organs in my hand. I took classes in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Anthropology, and Anatomy to enhance my knowledge in the medical field. My schedule was Monday through Friday, nine hours a day. It was tough, but I knew I had to push myself to achieve my goal.”

Romantic Jamilee

Jamilee is known for her romanticism and fully expressed this at last year’s Lit Café. She holds the deep belief that love is the most beautiful thing life has to offer.

“I am a romantic because I have seen how love truly is and how it can do things that no other person or thing can do alone,” she said.

A passionate and emotional person, Jamilee lives by the philosophy that she was born with so much love and it’s her job to share it with the world.

Life at Miami Senior High

Like many kids at Miami High, she applied to Gables, but got put on the waiting list. Jamilee does not regret going to Miami Senior High. “This school is unlike any other. The spirit we show in pep rallies and homecoming makes me feel at home. I have loved my four year years here and will miss this school,” she said.

Earlier this school year, Jamilee joined the bowling team. “I completely loved the experience,” she said. “My team made it to GMAC, a county-wide tournament, and I could not be more proud.”

Joining bowling forced Jamilee to manage her time wisely. “Missing classes for games put me behind. However, this is where I had to discipline myself and make up all the work I missed,” she said.

Besides sports, Jamilee’s also a member of the Interact club and strives to attend the as many services as she can. However, it’s hard for her because she also has a part-time job at Wetseal in Bayside. She loves to sing in her free time and has participated in many school talent shows.

Personal Life

Jamilee Yern was born on March 10, 1998, in Queens, New York. When she was three years old, she moved to Florida with her mom. Most of her family is from Dominican Republic, but her dad is from Cuba.

Jamilee’s family is pretty big. “I have three sisters who are all in their late 30s, and I was blessed to become an aunt,” she said.  “My nieces and nephews look up to me, so I know I have to make them proud.”

In the future, Jamilee wishes to pursue a career as a doctor. However, she doesn’t know which specific branch yet.  She’s taken Health Science courses in Miami High since her freshman year. “I love the classes,” she said, “but you have to be committed and have a deep passion for medicine.”
