School Uniforms

“I hate these uniforms. They’re so basic and uncomfortable,” is what most students say about having uniforms for school. Some might want to wear what pleases them, and rarely do students support the idea of having an everyday outfit.

Junior Cassandra Flores said, “Wearing a uniform doesn’t allow you to be your own person.”

Junior Christian Pedroso hates the fact that “you get punished if you don’t follow the policy.“ Indeed, assistant principal Mr. Arscott says, “If you don’t follow the policy, you get detentions, CSI, and even referrals if you do it multiple times.”

Some students think that there are actually advantages to having a uniform policy. Sophomore Candace Garcia said, “For a lot of students, uniforms might be more affordable than buying clothes they desire.”

“With uniforms we all look the same, and you don’t have to worry about matching,” said sophomore Nathaly Deleon.

Junior Gamalier Garcia said, “Uniforms help everything be in order in case of an emergency, so everyone knows where to go and be.”

The Miami High uniform policy

Tops: Polos (navy, gold, white).  MHS club jerseys and other MHS t-shirts approved by the Activities & Athletic Office may be worn.

Pants: Must be navy, khaki, or blue jeans.

Shorts: Bermuda shorts (knee-length) in navy, khaki, or blue jeans.

Algebra teacher Mr. Wilson seems to agree.  “Uniforms make us all look more professional and our school look more organized and identifiable,” he said.

A big question some students have is, “Can the policy be changed?” Assistant principal Arscott said that our uniform policy is already a lot more lenient than the majority of schools, so there is no need for it to be changed. He also said that almost all schools in our county do have a uniform policy.

However, some students had a couple suggestions to improve the policy. Junior Michelle Gutierrez said, “It could be changed by having uniforms some days of the week and not all.” Junior Adonis Lobo said, “Whoever is against it could come together and start a petition.”
