The Most Crucial Thing in High School

Grade Point Average (GPA) is very crucial when it comes to performance in school, especially at Miami High where we believe in striving for the best.

Sophomore Veronica Suri said, “My GPA is 3.7, and I get worried about it because my graduation depends on it. I made a lot of effort, for example coming to tutoring, participating in class, and not skipping classes.”

The way that a Stingaree works for their GPA is incredible. “I do care to maintain my GPA for many reasons. One of them is that I want to make my parents proud of me and after that get a good career, because with a good GPA you are able to do many things here at Miami High, for example, join a club,” said junior Gijany Zarraga.

However, there are students who don’t stress about their GPA, like sophomore Kevin Izquierdo, who has 1.5 GPA. “I have a low GPA because I fall asleep in class or at home, I don’t do homework and come late to school,” he said.

Junior Rony Hernandez said, “At some point I do care about my GPA, but in another I don’t. I fall asleep in class, I don’t do my homework or classwork, and my excuse is that I don’t speak English.”

For many new students at Miami High, it is hard to maintain good grades and GPA. “I really care about my grades but the language is an obstacle for me. When I get home, I don’t do my homework or I don’t come to tutoring and that makes me an irresponsible student,” said sophomore Katherin Benitez.

Many students improve their grades thanks to the teachers who help them with motivation. For example, sophomore Andrea Subriabre who increased her GPA by pushing herself, said, “I come to tutoring, I do my homework, also I don’t speak English, but I try.”

Many teachers talked about the different kinds of students who have improved their grades over the years. “Of course I had many students who started with low grades, but with effort, little by little, they improved their GPA,” said ESOL teacher Ms. Morales.
