As a new school year rolls around, students are getting introduced to new teachers who, no matter the grade level, have very similar ‘pet-peeves’ regarding their students.

Teachers’ Pet-peeves outside of school

Teachers’ lives aren’t only their jobs, and since the world is unpredictable, that means that anything in the world can affect their mood in terrible ways, and if a teacher angry it might affect how they teach you. Biology teacher Ms. Rulan’s response was one that most of the teachers agreed on, which was Miami’s traffic. English 2 and AP Literature teacher Ms. Pou does not like when people are inconsiderate and just don’t think at all before, they speak. As someone that had her class last year, I can confirm that she has gotten very annoyed when a student does something for their own benefit without thinking about how it will affect others. Italian and AP Spanish teacher Mr. Ortiz stated that his ‘pet-peeve’ is, stupidity. When asked for context, he refused to clarify. English 2 teacher Ms. Guerra stated, “When kids eat with their mouth open, it genuinely angers and disgusts me, and it can ruin my day.”

Things that students do that annoy teachers

Students also have a lot to do with the negative mood of teachers.  Ms. Pou gets frustrated when students don’t try at all.

Ms. Rulan said, “Lying and making excuses for not doing something is the worst thing that a student can do to a teacher.”

“I believe that using a phone while a teacher is trying to work is a universal annoyance for teachers,” said the I.T. teacher. Mr Diaz another student of his said he would scream if a student was on their phone without doing any of the work.

Worst experience with students

Many of the teachers interviewed have been working for more than 5 years in in this profession, so it isn’t a surprise when many of them had horror stories when it comes to students. Mr. Ortiz, who has been working as a teacher for 34 years, stated, “One time, the police went to my class because they were looking for a student.” Again when asked for more context about why the police were there, he said that he would rather not explain. Mr. Diaz said, “I used to have a student that when asked about why he didn’t do any of his work, screamed at me because he didn’t want to do anything. How can someone so young can be so angry at the world.” Ms. Pou, who’s been working as a teacher for 6 years, said, “I’m sure it annoys every English teacher when students plagiarize work, but it bothers me when it’s clear that the student didn’t even try to hide the plagiarism.” She also gets frustrated when students ‘tell’ on other students.

The result of disrespectful students

As students, we’ve seen teachers give detentions, CSI, and lower conduct grades because of misbehavior. Those are the actions the teachers are legally required to do when a student isn’t behaving in the way that is expected for their age and grade level, but they also have their own ways to handle the misbehaving attitudes of students “I try to reach out to the student,” said Ms. Rulan. “If the student is being stubborn, then I have no other options but  to contact their parent. I try to give all my students a chance, but if they don’t give themselves that chance, then I have no other options.” Ms. Pou agrees with writing students up, but she still gives all her students a chance to talk to her before taking that extreme.
