Publix is a supermarket used by many in the United States every day. This establishment is also a welcoming company, with a friendly vibe to it as well.

According to the company website <www.Publix.com>, founded by George W. Jenkins in the year 1930, Publix is a supermarket corporation in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. When you join the Publix team, you are part of an employee-owned business. Everyone that’s on the management staff has once been a regular employee at the stores you love and know.

Employees are also treated with periodic rewards. For example, I got a $100 employee gift card for Publix a few weeks ago, along with 2 other friends, as a “Thank You,” for working at Publix and being a part of the team.

Why Publix?

The interesting part about Publix is that if you work there long enough, you even may become a manager of a department, or even the entire store. The many departments at Publix are the Deli, Floral, Grocery, Meat, Seafood, Produce, and Bakery departments. Along with all of this, Publix strives to be clean and neat.

For me, working at Publix is important because it’s good to have the experience, and it’s nice having my own money and being responsible with it as a person.

People get jobs at Publix for a variety of reasons. Some may work there for financial issues, while others may work there for just some extra money. Publix is a good place for a first job. I took notice and got this job for all the benefits and especially the friendly working environment.

Since you need to be at least 14 to work at Publix, most teens decide to work there because of the age requirement, along with the flexible schedule that Publix has to offer.

“I decided to work there to save money, and buy the things I really wanted, along with saving some of that money,” says Publix bag boy Reynaldo Rodriguez, a junior from Miami Senior High School.

Behind the scenes

I work in the produce department where you stock all the fruits, vegetables, juices, and more. In some other departments like the bakery, you may decorate or prepare items and foods for the shelves in front of the bakery. In the meat department, you cut up different kinds of meat and put them out for the store. Another department you may find yourself in would be in the grocery department, where you bag or be cashier.

Most of the stores open at 7 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m. Junior Nicholas Cruz, said “I find myself closing a lot of the time because of my long hours.” If a worker wants, they can ask for more hours like he has.

What about Other Jobs?

Now Publix may be good and all, but what about other jobs? Publix gives you the opportunity to get a raise and rank up the positions. In Publix, you start off with a lower position like produce. Sometimes Publix managers would randomly ask you if those positions (like cashier) were open. Nicholas recently got a raise and is now a cashier. He’s excited, though he pushed it off for a while, and now gets paid $13, from the usual $12-$12-50 that he was getting paid before.

From the produce department, you usually would get put as a cashier, in which you get paid more. Publix’s flexible schedule stands out from other jobs for students, since you can choose your days. This makes it easier to balance out work life, along with school life.

Applying

In Publix, you can submit a form online by doing a training simulator, with many options and scenarios. To speed up the process, some people like me goes to the place in which you are applying for and asks for the manager. Doing this, the manager will notice your will to want to work there, and they could even give you the job on the spot. From there, you may go on a zoom at a different date; in this zoom, you’ll sit down and listen, while also participating, while a speaker walks you through how Publix operates. An example of an important thing being said, is that employees under the age of 18 can’t touch any machines, nor sharp objects.  In the end, you do a training on the Publix computers and you’re off to go!
