As the year ends, we recap Miami High’s successful basketball season. They finished 23-9 which was a great accomplishment as they have not won 20 games in over 20 years! They were very dominant in a win towards Norland posted at 57-50. One of their heavy losses came early in the season to Sagemont, losing 68-69 in an overtime thriller. The team was very well-rounded with their 2 captains, Romari Robinson and Absalon Cortes, who both posted over 15 points per game. They also had 2 other main contributors, Aaron Richard and Joseph Jean, who each posted over 10 points and 7 rebounds per game.
The Miami High basketball team’s season was considered successful, although falling short in the end. They ended up losing to Columbus in both the district tournament and regional tournament. They struggled in the beginning of the season, taking losses to Norland, Sagemont, Northwestern, and Palmetto. After these losses, they went on to win 13 out of their next 14 games including revenge against Norland.
One of the team’s biggest accomplishments this year was winning over 20 games. Miami High was losing its hype that they worked for in earlier years, but this season helped remind people what Miami High basketball is all about. Although they made great accomplishments, it was not all good. They faced challenges throughout the season. In their game against Palmetto, many people on the team were sick, some could not play, and they took a hard loss. After this, they regrouped and went on a huge winning streak, including later beating Palmetto in the playoffs.
In terms of what the team will be doing after the season, they held an athletic banquet to celebrate key players and helpers in this year’s team. Players were recognized for certain aspects of their game that impacted the team. Gabriel Fernandez was an immense help for the team. He was recognized as the Defensive Player of the Year. He took pride in making the other teams’ best players struggle. After the school year, the team will continue practicing and going to team camps at colleges like St. Thomas University and Saint Leo’s University so players can get recognized by college coaches.
