Golf coach Mr. Upperco recently won a $50,000 grant for the golf team through his involvement with the Orange Bowl Committee. With the grant, he plans to partner with Melreese Golf Course and First Tee, an organization that tries to help young people make their lives better through playing golf. First Tee also offers tutoring and teaches core values such as honesty, intregrity, and respect.

Mr. Upperco reports that Miami High’s golf season began with practice on August 1st for the newly minted team of 5 girls and 5 boys and will continue through the middle of October. The first game of the season is against Coral Gables on September 8 at 3:30 pm at Melreese Golf Course.

This year is a rebuilding year for the team. “The objective for the season is to get the players to learn how to play golf,” Mr. Upperco said. It’s already too late to join the golf team this year, but you can see Mr. Upperco in room 3213 if you are interested in joining the team for next season. No experience is required.
