Miami High’s yearbook, the Miahi, is going through some changes that will take it in a new direction. Last year’s yearbook advisor Ms. Maria Hernandez has left Miami High to teach at Ferguson High School, and the Communications Technology teacher Ms. Idania Diaz has taken over.

The biggest change has to do with workflow changes because yearbook is now merged with the Communications Technology classes.

“I think yearbook this year will be more structured and will have more staff positions because there are more students this year.  Last year we only had an editor-in-chief, a lead photographer, a photo editor, and a business manager,” said lead photographer senior Luis Charles.

You can expect the yearbook’s content to change as well. “[This year] the students will be focusing on improving the yearbook by adding more captions, by having a better student index, and by including dynamic and creative photography,” said Ms. Diaz.

Ms. Hernandez was the yearbook advisor at Miami High for three years, which is almost a regular student’s high school tenure. When she decided to leave, the yearbook staff was shocked because they never expected it. Some of the yearbook staff felt a little disappointed when she left because it is their senior year and they wanted to spend their last year in high school with her.

“It was an emotional trip because she helped us become better yearbook editors because she would have us step out of our comfort zone,” said business manager and senior Anthony Porras. “Before she left we were able to create a book cover we [the staff] put our heart and soul into, and I hope everyone is able to enjoy it because of that.”

Although Ms. Hernandez is no longer at Miami High, this year’s yearbook students think that the book will become even better this year with the connection to Communications Technology where students will be able to learn a lot about Photoshop and new skills for photography.

“I think we’re going to have a great year with Ms. Diaz because she does graphics and that could be useful when it comes to yearbook,” said editor-in-chief senior Scarlet Garcia. “When we need anything done in terms of Photoshop, we could go to her for help because, although we have done our own work in Photoshop, there are moments when things won’t come out right. We need new yearbook students that know how to use Photoshop because the students that did have already graduated.”

Ms. Diaz says that this is the first time she will be a yearbook advisor so she will need to learn the way the yearbook works from the students. “Miahi has a great group of students, and when they’re combined with the graphic students, they can all take charge and we can help each other to make this a more fun experience,” she said.
