Tradition continues at Paint a Can ’15

While many students were rushing through Walmart and Office Depot buying school supplies the week before school started, others were here at MHS on August 17th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. painting trash cans. That’s right; over 100 students attended Paint-a-Can, an event that has been taking place in the teacher’s parking garage for the past 4 years.

All hands on deck!

Paint-a-Can is a day in which members and officers of the major clubs and organizations at MHS come together to show their school spirit.

Over 30 clubs attended this year’s colorful event. SGA provided 4 types of paint: black, blue, gold, and white. Even though SGA provided the paint, they told clubs to bring their own supplies.

“We encouraged them to bring additional paint and water to supply their members,” said SGA advisor Ms. Puentes. “We also had music playing so that our clubs would enjoy the time.”

Interact president Virmari Garcia-Davila said that 10 of her members and 8 officers helped paint cans. “Without those who came to help, I don’t think we would’ve finished,” she said.

Key president Larry Bravo said, “Nine of my officers and 8 members showed up to Paint-a-Can. Since it’s my senior year, I wanted as many of my officers as possible.”

Honoria president Hector Menendez says all his officers and a few members showed up to the event. “Although it wasn’t all of the members I wanted to come, we got our cans done quickly,” he said.

Creativity is key

When it comes to painting a house, you have to paint it all one color. Unlike houses, the cans you may see around MHS have different colors, showing spirit. “I painted my can burgundy and gold, with black letters, naming all my officers,” said MAO president Romel Perdomo. “I think it shows the full spirit of my club.”

Class of ’17 president Headly Cash said that, because the homecoming theme is sci-fi this year, all his officers decided to draw a Whippy holding a light saber in his mouth. “We also painted our can navy blue with white letters,” he said.

“We had two cans, a new can provided by SGA and one of our old ones that we all decided to repaint,” said BETA president Pablo Iraheta. “Our new can, painted with gold spray paint and black letters, mentions all the officers and their positions. It clearly shows our club pride.”

NHS president Jorge Perez, who says almost all his members showed up to Paint-a-Can, said that his historians drew the NHS symbol on their can with a stencil. “I give them props; the symbol came out very nice,” he said.

Why you should attend Paint-a-Can

Out of all the activities that clubs attend, many think that this should be on all students’ to-do list. “I think students would enjoy participating in this event because it’s a good way to express themselves and show the pride of their club,” said SGA 2nd VP Angel Espinoza.

SGA president Melissa Carcamo believes it’s a good time to interact and bond with club members. “It’s a fun team-building activity,” she said.

SGA recording secretary Nancy Miranda thinks that MHS students should attend because it’s a time to get together before school starts. “It’s one final event where you can get together over the summer with all the friends you hadn’t seen in months,” she said.

Although it was a very hot day, many thought the event went very well. “I think the best part was interacting with my officers and the other clubs in general,” said Class of ’18 president Ingrid Espinoza-Hueck.

Aware president Patricia Moreno really enjoyed when everyone started painting the can because you saw how creative everyone was.

The best part for SGA corresponding secretary Yoyslaisi Fernandez was seeing how the cans looked in the end.
