A new year, new t-shirts with new styles, new colors and new themes!! Wearing polo shirts everyday can be both boring and uncomfortable with tightness on the sleeves and heat getting trapped in the heavy fabric.
Students at Miami High have different opinions on the T-shirts. Senior Hector Menendez likes the great variety of shirts this year. Sophomore Karla Tudler liked the t-shirt with the big Miami on it so much that she took it away from her sister.
The creative mastermind behind the new t-shirt design was Junior Class Advisor Mr. Jorge Portuondo and a couple of his officers. There were nine brand new shirts offered for sale this year: Retro, Straight Outta Stingtown blue and white, C/O 19, C/O 18, C/O 17 and C/O 16, the Baby Sting, the athletic shirt, and the Homecoming shirt.
Ninety shirts were ordered for each design. All shirts cost $10, but the senior class shirt is $15. Senior and SGA President Melissa Carcamo said, “They are making our class money so I love them”
Miami High students’ favorite shirt of all the new offerings was “Straight Outta Stingtown”. Mr. Portuondo said, “There were 360 Straight Out of Stingtown shirts ordered, and they sold in less than two week.”
Senior Larry Bravo said, “I like the fact that we were the first school to do the shirt & everyone copied.”
“They are live,” said senior Joseph Fuentes. “It is very thoughtful how they turned the movie Straight out of Compton to Straight out of Stingtown;.”
Junior Nathalie Parra said, “I like the shirt because I also liked the new movie.’’
“The seniors, we be coming straight out of Stingtown,” affirmed senior Bryan Monge.
That doesn’t mean everyone was happy with the new shirts. Sophomore Anthony Avila said, “I think Straight Out of Stingtown was a little bit too much of a copycat.” Senior Josseline Morales said, “I hate the Straight out of Stingtown shirt and the Class of 16 long sleeve because it’s misspelled.” Senior Larry Bravo didn’t like the Baby Sting shirt because it’s very plain.
What T-shirt styles would Miami High students want to see around school in the future? Senior Zarai Huete hopes for a long sleeve shirt available for all grades “because even though we live in Miami, classes are very cold.”
Larry Bravo said, “I’d like to see a black Class of 16 shirt because I think we should have at least one black shirt.” Senior Lucy Noguera would like to see navy and white glitter shirts and more V-neck shirts.
