A friend and also a Teacher

You have heard him scream, “Come on. “Let’s go,” while students run on the PE field. Mr. Carreno, who has been teaching PE for 15 years, said, “When I was a kid I wanted to be a professional basketball player. However, as time passed, I saw how hard it was to make it to the NBA, so I decided to be a teacher and basketball coach instead.”

PE Teacher

Mr. Carreno says that he always loved working with kids and playing sports, and being a PE teacher is the way he put both of them together. “Honestly, I love everything about my job. I don’t feel like I’m going to work,” he said. “The best thing about being a teacher has to be the teacher/student relationships that you build over the years and watching students that you once taught become young adults by the time that they graduate.”

Although Mr. Carreno loves being a PE teacher and having a good relationship with his students, he doesn’t like when students are disrespectful or lazy.;

Department Chair Person

Besides being a teacher, Mr. Carreno has been the PE department chair person for 3 year. He accepted the position because the school administration asked him to take over the position from baseball coach Mr. Suarez. “The hardest part is trying to organize everyone,” he said, but he is very grateful for the other PE teachers that help make his work easier.

MHS Alumni

Mr. Carreno graduated from MHS with the Class of ’95. His high school years were “amazing”. He said, “We had so much pride in our school. Playing basketball, with the friendship and brotherhood within the team, made my high school experience even better. It was fun beating other teams and forming a lifelong bond with other friends that came from all different backgrounds.”

Even though there were more high schools in Miami back then, because of Miami High’s basketball tradition, there was no other school that he wanted to attend. However back in those days, Mr. Carreno admits that there was violence and gang activity in the school, but that did not stop his wish to be part of the school’s alumni.

Mr. Carreno loves sports so PE was one of his best subjects in his high school, but so was math where he reached Pre- Calculus. “It just came natural to me,” he said.

Life Outside School

Mr. Carreno was born in Miami (Mercy Hospital) and has 2 younger brothers. His parents are Cuban. He is now married to Stephanie, also a Miami High alumna, whom he met after her high school graduation. They have been married for three year, and they have a two year old daughter and a boy on the way.

His favorite hobby is creating daily experiences for his daughter. “When I’m not working, I’m usually doing something with my daughter such as taking her to the park, the zoo, or the Children’s Museum, etc.”
