Teacher Appreciation Week

By Joselyn Zamora

Teacher Appreciation week, May 2nd-May 6th, was a time for Future Educators of America, led by their advisor Ms. Berrios,  to congratulate teachers on all their achievements and hard work that they have done throughout the year. This year’s theme was “Whippy Whips to the Wild West”.

“Future Educators of America has been planning for this event since the summer of 2015 and preparing for it since January,” said Vice President Ariel Trueba.  Sophomore Danyela Betacourt was one of the many FEA members who stayed afterschool, tracing and painting banners. Sophomore Malick Jamhour designed the invitation letters that were given out to teachers.

Bringing the event together took a lot of time and dedication, rough times and easy times. “Yes, it was a lot of pressure, but being a dedicated and loyal officer, I spent countless hours of the day trying my best to fulfill all of the tasks,” said FEA’s historian Adelain Sans.

Continental Breakfast

On May 2nd, as early as 5:30 A.M., F.E.A. members and officers were already in their Whippy Whips to the Wild West attitude. The continental breakfast, sponsored by the Marlins Ayuda Organization, included coffee, pastries, and croquetas.

“I arrived at school at 6:00 A.M. I helped set up the tables where the food was going to be placed and helped take pictures of the teachers in the jailhouse,” said sophomore Elizabeth Astacio.

Sting Ranch

On May 3rd Sting Ranch was set up afterschool in the school cafeteria. This event had various activities for teachers: bobbing for apples, pie eating contest, and the key event—a square dancing contest, which featured 6 pairs of dancing teachers. The winners were activities director Ms. Rivero and her partner reading coach Mr. Suarez.

“I thought it was awesome!! It was so much fun,” said English 2 teacher Ms. Zamora, who placed 3rd with French teacher Mr. Fertil. “The FEA kids did a great job putting it together. Everyone enjoyed it!”

Relax Time

Teachers were definitely looking forward to Saddle Up for Massage Day. Teaching requires an excessive amount of energy and getting a massage at school was such a great way to release all the stress. The Professional Hands Institute massage therapists came during 1st and 2nd lunch to give free massagesin the teachers’ lounge.

Hosted by school principal Mr. Valdes, happy hour appetizers were waiting for teachers afterschool at Tarpon Bend in Coral Gables.

Special Wagon Delivery

Teacher Appreciation Week wrapped up on Friday May 5th when FEA members delivered a notepad and a tumbler to every teacher in the school.
