Preparing for the Future

You’ve worried about the tests. If you do not pass the required tests, you will have to face the consequences.

At all Florida public high schools, students must take the following required tests: grade 9 FSA Writing and Reading, grade 10 FSA Writing and Reading, Algebra 1 EOC, Algebra 2 EOC, Geometry EOC, Biology EOC, and U.S. History EOC.

In order to graduate, you need to pass grade 10 FSA Reading and Writing and Algebra 1 EOC. “You can’t get a high school diploma if you don’t pass the tests, just an attendance diploma,” said the assistant principal for curriculum Ms. Leal.

ESOL students must pass the tests as well, but only after they have been in the USA for 1 year. “I recommend for them to come to tutoring after school and on Saturdays,” said Ms.  Leal.

Students have different opinions about which required tests are the most difficult. For Michelle Arteaga, a sophomore, “The hardest one for me is the FSA because I am an ESOL student and the language is an obstacle for me.”

Allison Mendoza, a freshman, claims, “Math is my weakness so the Algebra EOC is the most difficult for me.”

Not all students prepare for the tests in the same way.

Keyry Alaniz, a freshman, prepares by reading grammar books, working on the math website IXL, and reviewing class notes.

Aileen Milanes, a freshman, said, “I’m studying in groups with my friends and watching online tutorials.”

Tutoring at school helps many students. Junior Caceres, a sophomore, said, “I’m come to biology and geometry tutoring and do Test Prep, a website that helps to prepare for the FSA.”

Christian Ardite, a junior who comes to tutoring after school, said, “I’m learning a lot and something new every time.”

Melanie Viera, a sophomore, said, “Tutoring helps me a lot because I understand the topics better and the teacher explains very patiently.”

Ms. Vela, the testing chairperson at Miami High, reminds students: “Please don’t be absent on tests days, eat a good breakfast, and be on time.”
