Junior Idilio Ramos’s favorite place at Miami High is the Ruben Dario statue.

Miami High School is a neighborhood school with a lot of tradition and many buildings. It began as a little wooden schoolhouse in 1903, and is currently the oldest high school in Miami-Dade County.

The current school buildings, which were built in 1928, are famous for their architecture and features. According to the article “Miami Senior High School gets a $55 million upgrade”, posted on the website for cbs.local.com, “It was designed by the architectural firm of Kiehnel and Elliot, containing an architectural style of the late 19TH and 20th century revivals, Mediterranean Revival with Moorish elements.”

 Renovations

In 2006, the architects completed a master plan to expand, renovate, and restore Miami High which led to the most ambitious construction project ever. MHS went through a $55 million-dollar renovation. According to the same article “The school has two new wings on either side of the original buildings.”

According to the article, “The Second Century” posted on the website mhs.dadeschools.net, “There are several ‘signature spaces’ that help define the historic character of Miami High – the Theater, the Library, and the Gym are the three most important.”

 What’s your favorite?

With so many interesting architectural details, different parts of the Miami High campus attract different people. For Junior Idilio Ramos the most eye-catching place at Miami High is outside of the first building, where there’s a Ruben Dario statue.

Freshman Fatima Lopez also likes that courtyard. “It has all these eye-catching plants, and it makes me feel at ease. I love nature and I go there when I need time to think,” she said.

Sophomore Pamela Cordoza said, “The water fountain in the patio is my favorite place to look at. I usually go there to sit with my friends after school. It has beautiful water cascades with clean water that looks refreshing.”

Senior Sylvia Escobar said, “The main entrance of the school gives me a peak of nature. I love photography, and it’s a nice place for me to take pictures. It has nice lighting, and it’s a really peaceful place to go to clear your mind.”

Junior Jessica Torres added, “I love looking at the signature spaces that define Miami High, like the theater. I’m glad they decided to include that to the renovation.”

 Any changes?
If you had the chance to change something from your high school to make it better, would you? Junior Jorge Cruz says, “I wish we had fewer buildings. I remember my freshman year how lost I was…and I know for a fact that incoming freshmen feel the same.” Junior Pedro Ramos added, “I love nature and I wish we had more time to enjoy it during school.”
