The Small Club That Made History

By Shirley Lopez

Students join clubs for various reasons. Most students join to look good on college applications, and some join because they want to feel a part of something. Future Educators of America (F.E.A.) is a small club in Miami Senior High School that is all about the teaching profession. If you have a specific teacher you want to appreciate and acknowledge, F.E.A. is the club to join.

What do you guys do?

According to club advisor Ms. Berrios, the purpose of F.E.A. is to promote interest in the field of education as well as show appreciation for the teaching profession and teachers. She said, “F.E.A. hosts Teacher Appreciation Week, does Teacher of the Month and Teacher of the Year, participates in the homecoming parade, goes to conferences, organizes GenLx—which is like Ted talks for students, has meetings every other Tuesdays and has socials and services.”

Joining is a great way to give back to teachers for all their hard work while also being involved in school. “F.E.A. is not only about giving back to teachers; we give back to communities,” said Ms. Berrios.

Why should people join?

People join for different reasons. “Since we’re a small club, we all get along and get our points across with no problem,” said 1st vice president Marierling Perez. “F.E.A. gives back to our community and appreciates our teachers and academic community. A small club has never in history placed in homecoming, but F.E.A changed that.”

2018-2019 F.E.A officers Andrea Burgos, Natalie Garcia, Natalie Capote, Aaliyah Carvajal, Shirley Lopez, Andrea Nolasco, President Daniela Bannon, Marieding Perez, club sponsor Ms. Berrios and Jason Pineda.

How does this club make MHS a better place?

Teachers work so hard throughout the year and should be appreciated every month. F.E.A. makes sure that they can make a teacher’s day or even make their days a little less stressful. “I feel it’s very important to acknowledge both students and teachers because they contribute to our learning environment in the school,” said club treasurer Natalie Garcia.

Teachers are always excited for what awaits them in Teacher Appreciation Week because it makes their days so much better. Last year F.E.A. had massages for teachers along with breakfast and coffee. According to president Daniela Bannon, they also gave out awards to teachers.

What makes this club different from others?

F.E.A. stands out at MHS for different reasons. “One club, one family,” says Ms. Berrios. When club members have disagreements, they talk it out instead of arguing, which makes them get along better.

President Daniela Bannon says, “You can’t make a small school big, but you can make a big school small.” Usually small clubs don’t place in homecoming, but F.E.A. didn’t let that stop them from dreaming big and putting their all into doing so. “We put our all into building a float and won 3rd place in the homecoming parade,” said former historian Deysy Quirch.
