Students at Miami Senior High love their cars. It is an easy method of transportation when they must go to work, school, or they live far away. Most of them cannot afford one; they usually take the bus, walk home, or their parents come to pick them up. On the other hand, some students that own cars are lucky because their parents help them pay for it or they work for it.

 How they got their car

Some students at Miami High work and pay for their own car. Senior Eduard Sander owns a blue 2008 Mazda3, senior Maria Vegas owns a 2018 Lincoln MKC, and senior Isaac Chavez owns a 2022 Chevy Blazer.

However, Genesis Alvarez who owns a white 2019 Toyota Tacoma got it thanks to her parents who help her pay for the car insurance.

Choosing the best car for them

These students have owned their cars for almost two years. Some of the cars are brand new, which do not necessarily need much repair, and the other ones are used cars. Students like and choose their car because it provides flexibility to travel anywhere, reduces travel time and makes driving comfortable and enjoyable for them. Maria said, “The reason why I like my car is because its gives me a sense of freedom.” Isaac Chavez said, “I like my car because it’s fast and new.”  Genesis said, “I like my car because I can put many things in the back of my truck.”  Eduard said, “I like my car because it’s better than walking home when the weather is bad.”

 Thoughts about their car

These students do not think their cars to be the best compared to others because they say that there are other cars that are much better, faster, and cooler than theirs. They think that having a big car or used car is not really “cool.” Eduard Sander, who owns a used car, said, “My car is old and needs some repairs.” His in his car from 2008, which he bought from his cousin, “The right shock absorber is broken, and the steering wheel alignment is off.”

On the other hand, some students think the opposite. They said that their cars are cool because they are modern fast, big, and many people can fit in the car. Isaac Chavez said, “My car (Chevy Blazer) is big so I can fit like 8 or 9 people in it.” Maria Vegas said, “I considered my car (Lincoln MKC) cool because I don’t waste a lot of gas.”

Genesis said, “Driving a big truck helps with my driving skills. In case I must drive a smaller car, I already know how to handle a big one and drive it perfectly fine.” However, she said that her car is not fast enough like the small ones.

 New vs. Used Cars

If you want to drive, you need to decide if a new or used car would be best for you.  According to the article titled “Should you buy a New or Used car?’’, posted on the website for Car and Driver magazine <https://www.caranddriver.com/auto-loans/a42690597/buy-new-or-used-car.> , new cars have much more beneficial technology. For example, they have keyless ignition and automatic motion detection and cameras, which prevents thieves from stealing the car. Used cars, on the other hand, have a higher chance of breaking down because of the worn-out parts which result from their use, and they lack modern technology.
