He’s a teacher, coach, father and former Miami High student. Mr. Javorie Wilson has dedicated his life to help students reach their potential when it comes to academics and sports.

Teaching

   Mr. Wilson has been teaching for 12 years. What inspired him to become a teacher was, “Having the opportunity to change the lives of kids and help build their foundation for post-secondary education.”

However, he says that if he wouldn’t have become a teacher, he would’ve liked to be an accountant because he likes the whole process of dealing with numbers, record keeping, money, and financial documents.

He started his teaching career at Booker T. Washington High School and was there for 9 years. He taught Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II, was head JV basketball coach for 4 years, and varsity head coach for 5 years.

He later transferred to Miami High because the boys varsity basketball head coaching position became available. “Also, the basketball program is well-known around the United States, and I didn’t want to pass up the opportunity,” he said.

He is currently teaching Algebra I and says that the best part of all his teaching years has been, “Seeing my students graduate and attend college.”

Coaching

Mr. Wilson has been the head coach of the boys basketball team since 2005. He decided to become a coach because he loves the game of basketball and likes being able to help his student-athletes evolve into solid basketball players and model citizens.

He says that he expects his players to be solid students, role models, and develop discipline through basketball.

Some of his favorite highlights from coaching are:

  • Being the first coach to win 20 games at Booker T;
  • Having players make 1st team All-County (Richie Spiller in 2012-2013 who also got a Division 1 scholarship, Demetrius Jackson in 2014 who also won Male Athlete of the Year, Marlon Sierra in 2016, and Anthony Mera in 2017);
  • Winning GMAC tournament games;
  • Winning the district 14-8A championship in 2016.

Personal Life

Mr. Wilson was born in Miami, but his family ancestry includes a mix of Bahamian and Cherokee Indian. He has 2 sisters and 1 brother. He is also a father to one boy (Javorie Wilson who is 8) and hopes for him to come to MHS one day because, “This school has a rich tradition and presents a family atmosphere,” he said.

His favorite childhood memories would have to be the time when his team in the Miami Beach PAL Optimist Club won the Pop Warner Football Championship in 4th grade and when he received 6 trophies in his 6th grade graduation for math, science, social studies, language arts, music, and P.E.

Mr. Wilson graduated from MHS with the class of 1999. His high school highlights include winning 3 basketball state championships in 1996, 1997 and 1998, traveling to Hawaii and Tennessee with his team, and building bonds with his teammates and teachers.

After high school, Mr. Wilson went to Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he played on the basketball team and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
