It is the perfect time to start your search for scholarships! Where to find them? How to apply? What are the requirements? Those are the frequently asked questions seniors start to wonder when this time is approaching.

Applying for scholarships opens the door of education. CAP advisor Ms. Puentes said that scholarships can pay for tuition, room and board. That way you are not in debt at the end of your college career. Some scholarships are targeted towards minorities, and could be based on your race, religion, disabilities or other specific situations. “There is an unlimited number of scholarships you can apply for,” said 12th grade counselor Mr. Cuevas.

Scholarship applications have different requirements. “Have an impressive GPA, a good amount of community service hours, and leadership in high school,” said senior Leonardo Guerra, who is applying for the Posse Scholarship.

Senior Tre Thompson, who is applying for the Carnival Scholarship, said that it is more than just good grades; it is being involved in and out of school and standing out.

“Colleges send information through mail about programs you can join and scholarships you can earn by just sending scores and grades,” said senior Dayami Mas, who is applying for the Mas Foundation Scholarship.

Students can find these scholarships on websites like Fastweb, Scholarship, Posse Foundation, etc. Websites like Raise.me give micro-scholarships to selective universities by submitting all your high school credits and the extracurricular activities you have been involved in.

“Universities have their own in-house scholarships and some high school alumni, such as Miami High, offer their own,” said Ms. Puentes.

Mr. Cuevas explained that universities like FIU (Florida International University), UM (University of Miami) and UF (University of Florida) offer personal grants and have Merit Scholarships that you can apply for if you meet all the requirements.

Surprisingly, there are several scholarships that go unclaimed. Mr. Cuevas said that students do not apply for scholarships that are offered by the school or for Bright Future, and they lose the opportunity. “It is time to apply now,” said Mr. Cuevas. “However, it is never too late to apply. As long as you meet the requirements, you need to apply.”
