Miami High’s very own Law and Leadership Honor Society

One of LLHS’s most popular activities included having lunch with a          judge.

Have you ever thought of our future leaders? Maybe the kid you sit next to in English class can become the future governor, and you don’t even know it. Or somewhere right now, there is a lady with her baby—what are the odds that she’s changing the future president’s diapers?

Law Alumni

As a matter of fact, Miami High has its own notable alumni with careers in law. A notable example would be former 38th Florida governor Bob Graham, who graduated from Miami High and later attended Harvard Law School.

Law and Leadership Honor Society

What exactly does it take for someone to go from being just another teenager to a future leader? This is where the Law and Leadership Honor Society comes in to give the answers.

Besides being one of Miami High’s newest clubs, LLHS is one of the greatest honor societies yet. Going on field trips to law schools, participating in community service projects, and having lunches with lawyers and judges are some of the exciting activities of this honor society.

“Law is everywhere. From your house, to your school, to your future job and families. It is important to know the rules around us, as well as our rights.  As Jefferson said, knowledge is power,” stated club advisor Ms. Yanelle Perez. “The Law and Leadership Honor Society is a place where common minds and leaders can take action and dive into their passions, whether it be law, law enforcement, or general leadership roles.”

Why join?

Students gain numerous benefits from being in the Law and Leadership Honor Society. “Being in LLHS opens a door of opportunities to young minds. It also gives you a unique perspective on law careers,” said the LLHS president Angel Navas. “It also looks good to colleges and universities,” said sophomore Cecilia Canas, another member of LLHS.

Even for students who still don’t know what to study in the future, Angel points out that being in LLHS provides a perspective on a variety of careers to help students choose the right career for them. She also stated that she gained opportunities to obtain leadership skills and learned more about responsibilities and public speaking.

Club members enjoy various aspects of the club. “I joined LLHS late last year, and immediately I was super wowed at the cool learning activities and experiences we had,” said club treasurer Lisbeth Chavarria, who also pointed out that LLHS focuses mainly on getting students more familiar with the law field.

One way that students get an understanding of what a real law career is when LLHS hosts luncheons with well-known judges and attorneys. Over a meal, said club sponsor Ms. Perez, students learn the requirements of what it takes to work in the law profession and why it is important for a citizen to know the aspects of law.

In the field

In order to provide students with useful resources, the Law and Leadership Honor Society plans field trips that will benefit their members. “Students will gain the opportunity to view different careers through fieldtrips, service, lunches, and meetings.  Students will also gain knowledge and perspective on how they can become strong leaders,” Mrs. Perez pointed out.

The “Law Student for a Day” trip to Florida International University in early October will give LLHS members the essentials of how university life is for a law student.
