Chess coach Mr. Aguilar went to support the team in the District Championship. With him are freshman Xavier Alvarez and Tatiana Guerra who both won 3rd in their category.

Chess coach Mr. Aguilar reports that the team participated in the District championship on April 27th, where they won second place overall in the high school category. Freshman Xavier Alvarez won 3rd place, going undefeated with 4.5 points. Dariel Chavez tied for 5th place, also going undefeated with 4 points and senior Tatiana Guerra won 3rd for her division . Juan Franco and Steven Mencia completed the team.

Mr. Aguilar would like to recognize the work of Chess Team president Lisbeth Chavarria for developing a chess program in Shenandoah Elementary for kids in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. “The program was a complete success,” he said. “The elementary students went from not knowing how to play, to competing in tournaments and winning the title of second in the district. This is all thanks to her and assistant coach Angel Martos.”

To anyone that would like to join the chess team, please pass by room 5210 to request chess as a class for the upcoming school year and to work their way onto the team.
