Miami High’s Chess Team has had quite the different but interesting 2021-2022 school year. Although the chess team was unable to go to Nationals in Tennessee this year due to Covid19 precautions, they were able to attend the K-12 National Grade Level Championship in Orlando. In addition, Miami High’s Chess team also attended local tournaments and district tournaments. Chess Team Coach, Mr. Julio Aguilar is hopeful that next year things will be normal enough for the team to attend Nationals and various out of state events. Unfortunately, the chess team was met with a dilemma this year as majority of the team’s top players either transferred out due to family issues or moved out of state during the season. Despite the setbacks, Mr. Aguilar is incredibly proud of this year’s chess team and says every person is an asset to the team as well as a superb player. Coach Aguilar would like to honor player Bryan Amaya as the Chess Teams most improved player and Xavier Alvarez as the team’s best player. Mr. Aguilar feels that Bryan Amaya put forth maximum effort gaining more and more skill in the game with each passing day. In addition, player Xavier Alvarez excelled during games of chess, being a constant support for the team and going above and beyond expectations. Both players were relentless and stellar assets to the team, showing devotion with every single game.
