Sahily Guzman is an 18 year old senior at Miami high that is a section leader in band. She’s an impressive student overall after being recognized with the John Rusnak 3A award, a significant achievement within the Florida marching band community. She’s also a colorful character who’s known for having to balance a difficult array of AP classes and band while remaining “smiley”. Even when she’s exhausted and frustrated with everything she must do, she still tries her hardest to keep everything balanced.
Million-dollar band
As part of Million Dollar Band (MBD), she often performs in front of large groups of people as a flute player. Her talent has reached her to many inconceivable places, most notably when she played alongside famous Colombian vallenato singer Carlos Vives. Her time in MBD has given her countless memorable experiences. After becoming section leader in her Junior year, she has taken many responsibilities. It has also taught her important lessons like time management and authority and to focus on the things that matter. She’s gained lifelong friends and influences like her best friend Katherine Sanchez a woodwind player who became like an older sister that defined her sophomore year. Her freshmen year band captain Michael Albert who served as one her greatest inspirations. A key take away is that band has made into the person she is today.
Social life
Away from band she is certainly known throughout school. Her primary focus is maintaining her grades while balancing band and socializing with friends. She is happy for the friends she has made in her high school career. She tends to invest time in people who treat her with respect and those who want genuine help and advice from her. She also tends to avoid those who are disrespectful and talk behind her back. She loves to go out when she can to enjoy her time with friends. She loves watching movies, reading and listening to music, especially slow romantic genres.
Motivations
With lots of external pressures she also has ambitions and convictions that motivate her on her day to day. Role models such as teachers that have moved her to try harder Mr. Hernandez and Mr. Cid, Dr. DeNight and Dr, Suarez, people whom motivate her to persevere and make the distance like her parents and her faith with God, someone whom she says motivates her in her “toughest days.” Her faith provides strength when she needs to push forward past her failures .
Motivations on her future
She is also highly motivated to pursue criminal justice in FIU, Becoming anything in this field serves as a north star that no fist can overcome. She has also expressed the possibility of joining the army as well. Seeing herself come so impressively far makes her want to remain steadfast even when she fails and make the distance.
