She’s only been working at Miami High for one year yet is one of the most beloved teachers of Class of 2028 and Class of 2029. We all know who this is: the one and only Sophomore Class advisor and Women of Tomorrow sponsor… Ms. Almeida!
From me to you
Teenagers are so difficult. One second, they’re respectful and even playing around with you, but when you tell them to put their phone down and to do their work, they’re sucking their teeth and giving you attitude. It makes you wonder “Why do teachers even bother becoming one, let alone a club advisor?”
Although Ms. Almeida can agree teens can be… something… she wants to help create the best version of her students. “Every day is a new adventure with my special creatures,” she said. “I never want to give up on them.”
And to those wondering, she doesn’t mean “special creature” as a derogatory term. You’re just a very special creature to her! Because you’re so special to her, she wants you to be able to have memorable moments in Miami High like she once had.
“Get involved in activities, sports and clubs,” she said. “Find your place and your people. The people in Miami High stay forever in your heart.”
This is the very same reason why she took the opportunity to become a club advisor “I see the value that great advisors bring to school and students, so I wanted to be more involved in the community. Also, I was approached by someone I admired to become a club advisor,” says Ms. Almeida
Back at it again
Born on September 3rd 1992 in South Miami Hospital, Ms. Almeida is a Miami High alumna herself! As a student, she would take several honors and AP courses, and while she was doing well in her classes, her true passion was raising the MHS spirit.
She was in the Interact Club all 4 years, was part of Miami High Times, very involved in her graduating class and even received three awards for how involved she was! “I was an overachiever, friendly and very involved,” is how Ms. Almeida describes her teen years at Miami High.
Graduating in 2011 with a Rotary scholarship, Ms. Almeida was off to college and a successful career in the Miami-Dade Police Department as an administrator. “It was a fun and interesting career,” said Ms. Almeida.
However, as much as she enjoyed her career there, Miami Senior High School was calling her name to come teach. This was possibly due to her desire to have studied more while she was still a student. Too busy making Miami High… well, Miami High!
She also wanted to create a safe space for her special creatures and other students at The Miami High as she can understand what some of them can go through.
“Coming from a low income household, with only one working parent, I can relate to my students,” says Ms. Almeida. “Some advice I can give to everyone is to find a safe person you can talk to and be a safe person for others.”
What a boring life it is without Miami High
“Wake up early in the morning, get ready to go to your office job, work overtime, then go visit family members and then finally go home.” This was Ms. Almeida’s life for a long time until a light bulb went off her head: “What if I worked as a social studies teacher, and went to my roots at Miami High?”
What a wonderful idea it was, indeed. She says that ever since she started working at Miami High, her life has been a roller coaster ride with her special creatures!
Oh, Ms. Almeida, where would you be without us? “I have no idea, possibly another law enforcement agency,” she says.
Although she would love to be our teacher forever, Ms. Almeida has been thinking about becoming a TRUST counselor for teens, which means, in the future, she’ll still be here for you, but only if you schedule an appointment!
